Waxman: U.S. Imposes New Limits on Scientists

Rep. Henry Waxman said he has a letter showing that the Health and Human Services Department has imposed new limits on who may speak to the World Health Organization.

Under the new policy, WHO must ask HHS for permission to speak to scientists and must allow HHS to choose who will respond.

``This policy is unprecedented. For the first time political appointees will routinely be able to keep the top experts in their field from responding to WHO requests for guidance on international health issues,'' the California Democrat wrote in a letter to HHS Secretary Tommy Thompson.

``This is a raw attempt to exert political control over scientists and scientific evidence in the area of international health,'' Waxman wrote.

``Under the new policy the administration will be able to refuse to provide any experts whenever it wishes to stall international progress on controversial topics.''

1. Perhaps it's become more important
to only "allow" US Pharmaceutical companies scientific top drug researchers to provide the talking points for guidance and information. </sarcasm>

2. I am sure we are all shocked by this
It is getting to the point of becoming ridiculous. They totally feel the only way they can win on anything is total control of information. No more critical thinking allowed. People will be spoon fed any information the Cabal deems necessary and nothing else will be allowed.

3. Paul Weyrich will screen public health Drs. for "sound scientific views"
The Cato Institute and Tech Central Station will choose which NOAA and NSIDC researchers are allowed to attend climate conferences.

Halliburton and Andarko will supply all needed information on estimates of US oil supplies - no need to get that pesky USGS involved!!

Comrade Lysenko, we proudly welcome you to your new home!!

5. what??? what kind of bullshit is this?
Edited on Fri Jun-25-04 01:07 PM by SeattleDem
I can't imagine my former colleagues in public health refusing to talk to the WHO unless first approved by Tommy Thompson.

How is HHS going to stop on-going collaborations among people in the WHO and in the US who already have working and professional relationships??

on edit: okay, I read the article. How does Tommy Thompson prevent someone from going to a professional meeting? I completely don't understand this! How can a university-based scientist who is paying is own way to the premiere AIDS meeting in the world be denied attendance by the US government?? I could see if Thompson wasn't allowing government-employed scientists from going, but unaffiliated persons??

8. Censoring scientists is like trying to sweep back the ocean...
it'll be a whole lot of waste of money, and the next administration will throw this stupid idea out with the bureaucrat that thought it up.

Tommy T played in the home town of one of the greatest research universities in the midwest, I would have thought he knew better than to accept such a stupid mandate.

12. Except for the preoccupation with unification of church/state,
it looks more and more like we're living in the old Soviet Union.
Could this be what Moon was talking about when he said that Stalin had been reborn?
