Bitter Hamilton Liberals back NDP instead - CBC
And they include Hamilton's Santa Claus, so you know this is serious!

Bitter Hamilton Liberals back NDP instead

HAMILTON, ONT. - Some well-known members of a Hamilton Liberal riding association advised voters Friday to cast ballots for the local NDP candidate rather than their own candidate, cabinet minister Tony Valeri.

One of the defectors, Jimmy Lomax, told reporters gathered at NDP candidate Tony DePaulo's campaign headquarters that he had been a card-carrying member of the Liberal Party since 1962.

"This isn't the party I remember when I joined many, many, many years ago," he said.

"As a member of the Order of Canada and as Hamilton's Santa Claus, I urge you to vote for Tony DePaulo and to elect Hamilton orange, not red, this time around," Lomax said.

This is the second Ontario Liberal riding association to do this:

Brampton Liberals revolt, back NDP candidate
June 8

Brampton, Ont. — A Liberal riding association in Brampton has rejected a candidate appointed by leader Paul Martin and thrown its support behind the riding's New Democratic Party challenger.
NDP candidate Kathy Pounder

The Liberals in Brampton-Springdale, northwest of Toronto, were outraged when Martin cancelled their nomination vote by appointing Ruby Dhalla as their local candidate.

Their riding association executive responded Sunday by withdrawing its support for Dhalla, and voting to back local NDP candidate Kathy Pounder.

The Liberals are going to suffer in Hamilton. Quite likely all four of their MPs, including two cabinet ministers, will be defeated. Possibly all by NDP candidates.

Paul Martin or Sheila Copps - who's sorry now?

2. And I like Gord Guyatt's chances in
Edited on Fri Jun-25-04 01:34 PM by Minstrel Boy
Ancaster-Dundas-Flamborough-Westdale. Hadn't thought we stood a shot here a few months ago, but from what I've heard, it appears Guyatt's sewn up Dundas and Westdale, and the Conservative is likely beating the Liberal in Ancaster and Flamborough. We'll see Monday.

7. dunno
Could be related. Can't be that common of a name.

From what I understand, Gordon's a pretty well-respected doctor at McMaster Hospital.

6. basically the major parties shape up like this:
Edited on Fri Jun-25-04 02:11 PM by Minstrel Boy
Liberals = centre to centre-left (though the Canadian centre is more to the left on the US spectrum.)

NDP = socialist left

Conservatives = right (it's a new party, kind of a hostile takeover of our traditional centre-right party by the upstart far-right.)

Bloc Quebecois (BQ) = Quebec sovereigntist, social democratic.

8. Well, crudely...
NDP Good.

Liberals So-so.

Bloc Quebecois Okay, but pretty much single-issue.

Conservatives BAD.

Greens Good, but not ready for prime time--yet. :hi:

Marijuana Party Too stoned to vote. :hippie:

There are a few others, including the Communists and Newfoundland separatists, who are really pretty minor... It's quite a pastiche when you look at it overall.

11. Martin & His Bean Counters
Set it all up.
At the Liberal convention that crowned Martin, Chretien said don't forget the left. They didn't forget them they kicked them out.
See what happens when you listen to bean counters.
After a spate of neo-cons and removal of the bean counters we can vote for our priorities (if we get a chance).
