US safer if Gore in charge: Albright

THE United States would now be safer and more popular overseas had Al Gore instead of George W. Bush won the 2000 presidential election, former secretary of state Madeleine Albright said in remarks published yesterday.

Albright, who served with the ex-vice president in former president Bill Clinton's administration, said the Bush administration had needlessly antagonised many US allies by going to war with Iraq despite heated opposition in Europe and the Muslim world.

Gore, she said, would have acted more appropriately.

"As for Saddam, I believe the Gore team would have read the intelligence information about his activities differently and concluded that a war against Iraq, although justifiable, was not essential in the short term to protect US security," Albright wrote.

This article is on a number of Australian sites. It is important that the world be reminded that Bush is an aberration.

1. Definitely true. Gore would not have surrounded himself with
chickenhawks who were looking for a s second Pearl Harbor to happen so they would have an excuse to invade Iraq for all the various PNAC reasons--not to mention he would not have been interested in Iraq for the personal vendetta that shrub had who claimed Hussein tried to kill his father.
Also, Al Gore said after a speech in the last two years that he would have had more than one FBI agent working on Osams bin Ladin--Remember that John Ashcroft had pulled agents out of counter-terrorism and had them in New Orleasn trying to catch hookers.

18. That was propaganda by our Republican media
We were TOLD he ran a bad campaign and like everything else this media tells us to believe (eg California WANTS Arnold), we belive it!! In case you aren't aware of it Gore WON and if the Republicans had not engaged in voter fraud, the margin would have been much larger. You have been conned into believing that just like people have been conned into believing that Davis was a bad governor.

22. The American People DID want Gore
You seem to forget that Gore got over 500,000 more votes than Former Governor Bush did. You seem to forget that if a full and fair count of the Florida vote had been allowed, Gore would have won that state's electoral votes and therefore the Presidency.

In a democracy Bush* would never have been able to weasel his way into office and the country and the world would be infinetly better off than it is now.

5. If he ran such a dreadful campaign, please explain how
Gore managed to:

(1) close a ten point gap between him and Bush and

(2) receive more votes than any other Democratic presidential candidate in history.

It's pretty sad that DU'ers feel compelled to repeat the lies spread by the media, which abandoned its historically neutral role to instead assume the role of cheerleader to the Bush campaign.

The fact is that Gore started the campaign well behind Bush and he closed the gap, despite being heavily outspent and despite a constant barrage of negative press coverage. And the fact remains, more voters picked Gore to be their president than the other guy.

6. I agree
Why is that so many DUers bash Gore, along with so many threads against Dean and Kerry? The real enemy is George Bush and John Ashcroft and Don Rumsfield and Dick Cheney and Orrin Hatch and Jeff Sessions. I could go on, but you get my point.

8. My eyes are wide open
You tell me how a guy with a rip roaring economy (so what if it was built on the sand of the dot com bubble) and relative peace abroad can lose an election? The guy sucked as a candidate and he sucked twice.

he didn't lose. The Supreme Court took it from him.

As pointed out above, he got more votes than any Democrat in US history. That's not too shabby.

11. Yes he lost.
Get real.

When he should have won an election by 5 million votes and150 electoral votes he just squeaked by with 500,000 and lost the E.Vs.

Even if he would have ended up the winner it was a disasterous performance given the circumstances.

As to this crap about the him getting the most votes of any Democrat in history, when the population as a whole grows so does the number of votes that candidates get. He still didn't even approach Reagan's '84 totals and HE SHOULD HAVE!!

25. With negative thinking like you have displayed
in several of your posts, it's no wonder we have so many doubting. From your profile you are only 21 years old. Barely old enough to vote in 2000 and not old enough in '88. I think that you are a victim of the rheotorical proganda machine.

If you truely believe that Al Gore lost then I KNOW you are a victim of the media lies. Gore did run a campaign that distanced himself from Clinton, because of the obvious, something he now questions, however, unless you really know how the Rove machine works then thinking twice about how 2000 played out would benefit your negative tone on this.

17. Your opinion of his campaign relates to the thread topic, how?
We'd be safer if Gore had taken office.

His security policies might well have prevented the attacks of 9/11.

The wars on Afghanistan & Iraq would not have happened.

Explain why your boy's sitting on his can in a Florida classroom while the country was attacked should inspire any faith in his ability to protect the country?

4. "It is late, but not too late..."
"...for the Bush administration to adjust its course," she said.

This is especially worrisome.

Exactly what is it not too late for?

...for the merry Mrs. Albright to beg forgiveness for calling half a million dead Iraqi children a "price (that) is worth it"?

7. Interesting. She wasn't singing this song two months ago.
I saw her in person and she was in full support of the boy prince's phony war. So now she's come over to reality and truth.

What does it say when the people who run our government (or used to run it) are so much slower on the uptake than us regular folks?

My sense is that Madam Madeline is just an ass kisser. When Al came out with his extraordinary and powerful speech, she decided to climb back on board the Democratic express.

20. MADeline
Sometimes she hits the nail on the head and other times she is out to lunch. The Country would have been better off with the elected leader than some coup installed goofball. I also don't see how she sees war in Iraq as justifiable.
Yeah, this mis-administration can correct it's course and the blind followers will forgive all transgressions and wave the flag harder than ever. That's a shame that they can't be called on the misdeeds and run out of the country.
