Bush Seeks Democratic Reform in Mideast
Bush Seeks Democratic Reform in Mideast

By DEB RIECHMANN, Associated Press Writer

ISTANBUL, Turkey - A day after Iraq (news - web sites)'s new interim government claimed power, President Bush (news - web sites) said Tuesday that "freedom is the future of the Middle East," but made clear that what he means by democracy is not wholesale acceptance of Western pop culture.

"When I speak about the blessings of liberty, coarse videos and crass commercialism are not what I have in mind," Bush said in remarks here before ending a five-day trip to Ireland and Turkey. "There is nothing incompatible between democratic values and high standards of decency."

In another self-criticism after acknowledging widespread suspicion of U.S. motives, Bush said: "When some in my country speak in an ill-informed and insulting manner about the Muslim faith, their words are heard abroad, and do great harm to our cause in the Middle East."

Imperial and Orwellian.

Quite happy indeed.

Bush's Mideast initiative has been criticized by some Arab leaders, who accuse the United States of trying to export its brand of democracy while not doing enough to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Distrust of Bush's intentions by the Arab world deepened after American troops abused Iraqi prisoners and the president backed Israel Prime Minister Ariel Sharon (news - web sites)'s announced plan for Israel to withdraw from all Gaza settlements and parts of the West Bank

5. Hear that freepers?
"When some in my country speak in an ill-informed and insulting manner about the Muslim faith, their words are heard abroad, and do great harm to our cause in the Middle East."

Your boy is telling you to stop calling Muslims 'ragheads' or saying that they worship a 'demon-possessed pedophile'. Listen up Rimjob. Listen up Pat Robertson. Your boss is telling you to shut your fucking mouths. And for once, I agree with your boss.

8. Hmmmm....
"There is nothing incompatible between democratic values and high standards of decency."

This admin has a lot of nerve talking about decency these days, what with Ryan's privates and Crashcart's pottymouth making the rounds. What a crock of... um... well, shit.

10. Saw part of Dubya speech this morning...
The Neocons are up to no good -- business as usual I suppose.

I recently had the pleasure ... nay ... honor, of sitting next to a French diplomat on a plane-ride to Paris. We had some very interesting discussions, one of which was how France collectively does NOT want Turkey in the EU. Essentially, what he said was, "The Turkish are not Europe!" (I took it to mean that they are culturally different).

But here was Dubya this am yapping about how Turkey should be in the EU and blah blah blah. What the hell difference should the USA's position on who or who not should be allowed EU membership?? The chimp needs to focus on American foreign policy instead of attempting to sow discontent among the Europeans.

Typical neocon horse shit.......

11. blessings of liberty
Edited on Tue Jun-29-04 01:28 PM by Marianne
"When I speak about the blessings of liberty, coarse videos and crass commercialism are not what I have in mind,"

What mind? He has one?

What the hell is he talking about "crass commercialism"? HE and his propaganda machine ARE the crass and the commercial. Laura Bush billed as a "strong woman" is "crass commercialism" Telling us to go to Disney World and to shop after the WTC attack is crass commericialism.

The blessings of liberty he so likes to crassly commercialize, is that senior citizens by the droves cannot pay for their life sustaining medication.

The blessings of liberty is that billions of dollars are spent on bringing the "blessings of liberty" to small countries that we bomb to bits and destroy and kill thousands of their children and babies and other defenseless civilians and then award billions of dollars of no bid contracts to our well connected corporations, like Halliburton.

That is the "blessing of liberty" Bush loves.

We spend billions upon billions upon billions of dollars destroying a country and it's people and it's infrastructure on lies about it's threat to us, and then take off dead in the water, when we fail but, true to form, lying again, declare it a victory and declare it just honkey dorey now that we murdered so many and took the stuff we wanted, once the corporations, expecially Halliburton, are firmly ensconced amd raking in the war profits,of course, and we have BROUGHT THEM LIBERTY AND FREEDOM!!!

Jesus--will anyone call them on this atrocity? These desplicable, filthy lies?

I just returned from the little supermarket in my little home town and the newspaper headlines are blaring as if we won WWII all over again--we freed Iraq and NOW in the goodness of our heart, we gave them SOVEREIGNTY.

Jesus

We have our poor becoming more destitute, we have jobs lost and those unemployed unable to get another for years, we have shit for education for all our chidlren, we have a nation destroyed and without confidence in it's own system of elections and we have the baby Jesus running the show.

But, goddammmit, we brought liberty through death and destruction, greed and empire seeking, to the wailing families of Iraq.

.
