WASHINGTON, Aug. 14 — The nation's new campaign finance restrictions do not prohibit members of Congress from accepting corporate and union donations for legal defense funds, election regulators said Thursday.
The Federal Election Commission's ruling came after Georgia Rep. Denise Majette sought to raise money from corporations and labor unions to cover legal costs stemming from a lawsuit filed last year by the Democratic lawmaker she defeated in a primary election.
Former Georgia Rep. Cynthia McKinney alleged in the federal court suit that ''malicious crossover voting'' by Republicans in the Democratic primary caused her defeat. Majette ultimately was removed from the lawsuit and a federal judge in Atlanta earlier this week threw out the case completely.
