1. Can't see thread one
and the link the thread two looks ugly but works.

Looks like this is a repeat of 1965 (which I remember) when a cracked piece of glass in a resistor in a Canadian power station brought down the entire Eastern Seaboard

Niagara Mohawk deregulated in 1998. I thought deregulation was supposed to improve competition and the free market would foster improvements in power distribution.

...how many 'plain old fire' fires are there on a summer afternoon? One good sized fire per borough (less SI) per day seems reasonable.

It doesn't sound very much different from what one might expect normally, but some sources make it sound like London during the blitz.

41. Usage cop strikes agin...
Just a note for someone who posted in Thread #2---

"Affected" IS in fact correct usage in that context. W/ reference to "affect" in psychology, the usage is a noun, referring to aspect, manner, physical appearance indicating emotional/psychological state.

"Affect" is also a verb, passive voice, indicating that a change in state has occurred or is occurring (i.e., "Attendance at the barbecue was affected by the rain") due to an active agency.

"Effect" as a noun refers to to the result of an action (The effects of the rain on attendance at the barbecue.)

And finally, "effect" as a verb is active voice, referring directly to the act of creating a change ("Better weather should effect an improved attendance rate at future barbecues.")

helpfully,
Bright the Usage Cop

92. "Affect" need not be passive voice
The snow affected our travel time.

(Passive) Our travel time was affected by the snow.

The difference between "to affect" and "to effect" is not a passive/active difference (theoretically, any verb has both passive and active voices). Rather, the difference is one of meaning.

Effect means to accomplish, or bring about, and is a transitive verb. That which it brings about follows as the direct object.

Affect, also a transitive verb, means to produce an effect or change IN. The direct oject is not that which comes about, but that which is changed by the subject (in the active voice): The cold weather affected the crops (a perfectly respectable active voice construction of the verb "to affect"). In fact, "to effect" as in to bring about, is the more rare of the two, and is almost archaic in usage.

In any case, the difference between the two verbs has absolutely nothing to do with whether they are in active or passive voice.

You also missed my favorite meaning:

To affect, as in to present an articificial appearance:

Madonna affects a British accent (also active voice).

We were on the road when it happened and didn't hear the news until just a bit ago from a bank teller.

Rural NYS has electric here. We're amazed and think that possibly our electric comes from a small coal generating plant near Ithaca. All areas around us are out, having problems getting local news on the radio and tv.

Hope our friends stay safe.

2. This is very interesting...Black & Veatch ....national power grid...

Black & Veatch proposal envisions national power grid
By DAN MARGOLIES - The Kansas City Star
Date: 06/07/2001 22:15

With the Bush energy plan emphasizing production, Black & Veatch has unveiled a $15 billion proposal to establish a national power grid and to build power plants close to their fuel sources.

The Kansas City engineering and construction company calls its strategy TAG, short for TransAmerica Grid, and says it would increase supplies and reduce prices while bolstering the nation's grid capacity and reliability. "The energy crisis is not only about generating more power," said Dean Oskvig, president of Black & Veatch's power delivery division. "It's about getting surplus power to areas that need power."

....snip.....

The Black & Veatch proposal was developed in conjunction with Siemens AG. The two companies project capital costs of $3.8 billion for the proposed transmission system and about $11 billion for the power plants. The firms began developing the proposal in late 1998 and don't have any customers yet. The TAG system would address the problem of moving bulk power across the country. Experts say current electrical generation capability is sufficient to meet demand. But existing transmission grids, which move electricity from region to region, are considered inadequate to move electricity from areas of excess capacity to areas facing power shortages.

...snip....

To get the electricity to distant customers, TAG envisions the construction of high-voltage, direct-current transmission lines connecting the country's East and West coast grids. The new lines would add 6,000 megawatts to the current 1,000 megawatts of east-west transfer capability. The current transmission system basically consists of eastern and western interconnections that meet in Texas. The grids are separately synchronized alternating-current systems.

"The backbone of TAG is a high-voltage (direct current) system to move large blocks of power around the regions," Oskvig said. "The current grid is being used to move chunks of power in ways it wasn't designed to do. ... With TAG, if there was excess power-generating capability in the eastern U.S., and the western U.S. needed power, we could get it there."

Black & Veatch and Siemens pitched TAG in April to the energy task force headed by Vice President Dick Cheney. The proposal dovetails with a recommendation in the Bush administration's energy plan, unveiled last month, to look at the possibility of establishing a national grid and to identify measures to remove transmission bottlenecks. Right now, TAG is an idea in search of a customer. And it is not clear the idea would win universal acceptance.

...snip....

Oskvig said the technology underlying TAG was not exotic.

"What we're talking about is the first leg of an interstate superhighway system for transmission," he said.

100. Can't help but ask... but what role might
ENERGY DEREGULATION have played in this? On MSNBC Nachman (former 'city beat' reporter, as they kept touting him) went on and on that this was similar to the infrastructure problem in 1967... that was supposedly solved, and if not by then - should have been solved after 1975 (?) outage. He repeated it multiple times - that this infrastructure issue has supposedly been solved.

Made me think - maybe it isn't the type of infrastructure issue that is being suggested (thus a new problem and that is why not solved)...

OR change in systems using the infrastructure - with multiple companies ... could this be tied to the logisitics of deregulation? Just a wandering thought...

111. Lansing Michigan is the westernmost point of this blackout!
According to Tony Early, head of Detroit Edison, Lansing, Michigan is the westernmost point of this blackout. I was in Lansing when the power went out - the entire city is without power. Thankfully, Consumers Energy IMMEDIATELY removed themselves from the grid, so everyone to the west (and north, in my case) of Lansing was spared. Consumers has released a statement, saying that they will not return to the grid until power to the rest of the state has been restored.
We were at my eye surgeon's office when it happened. Everyone started freaking, until my husband started telling them what to do. Since we live in the country, we are used to lengthy blackouts, and have plenty of experience in dealing with issues like this.

GOOD LUCK TO ALL!!

131. Dan Rather just made another dry delivery: Bush's whereabouts
Here's what he just said, live, to the best of my typing ability:

"President Bush is on a trip to California, talking to some military people and tonight attending a big fundraiser for his reelection campaign and for Republican political purposes in general. Vice President Cheney, when last heard from, was vacationing in Wyoming.. uhh... as we all have to take from time to time. White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card, a very experienced Washington hand and public servant, has been left as the point-man to do whatever it is the federal government needs to do."

136. Awwww!!! People are stuck on Cedar Point Rides!!
Just heard this on CBS. Cedar Point is a great amusement park located in Sandusky, Ohio. Dan Rather just said power is still out there, and that people are stuck on rides throughout the park.

I feel sorry for them, but it's kind of funny in a way, as long as they're safe.... :-)

The Associated Press

Canadian officials said Thursday that a massive power outage across the Northeast and parts of Canada was caused by a lightning strike at the Niagara power plant.

143. Gee, that's a comfort
Didn't know it was still so easy to knock out the entire grid. I thought they were supposed to fix that the last time this happened?
