CHILD KILLERS OF THE CONGO
THE 15-year-old boy bites into a packet of jelly babies as he tells me how he killed. First there were the mothers, after he'd raped them. Then their babies. Four of them. The eldest aged three.

He speaks softly, with great precision, about what he did. Then he wanders off, having thanked me for the sweets, to play marbles with the other killers.

He is the oldest of 39 boys in this dusty compound. Laughing, boisterous kids who have seen and exacted horror beyond imagining.

They assemble for a school photo, jostling for position. A barked order and they suddenly freeze. Attention. Awaiting command, soldiers again.

Frozen on film, the class of child soldiers who, according to their teachers, have murdered at least 106 people.

1. quite awful stuff
I saw pictures of kids in Sierra Leone who had been mutilated by other kids. Scary stuff. I knew a guy who was a Marine in Somalia in 1992 who said that 10 year old kids walked around with AK-47s and RPGs everywhere. Every kid was armed.

2. This shit in Africa these days blows my mind. . .
Have these people reverted back to some base version of themselves? I don't get it and it makes me sick. The other day I read an article about a woman that was forced to watch her 10 year old daughter raped to death. And as the girl lay there, the rebels (or whoever they were) kept taking turns even though the child was dead already. What the fuck is going on in Africa that this is happening? I'd much rather we sent out troops to Liberia or the Congo than have them wasted in Iraq. A good movie on this subject is 'Tears of the Sun'.

TYY :wtf:

3. There is no oil, therefore no interest
Most of the Congo's natural resources have been ravaged through colonialization, so there's not much left. Certainly not enough crude oil to tap into therefore the neo-cons have written the area off.

4. CHILD CANNIBAL KILLERS OF THE CONGO (Title has changed)
One, at least, wears the testicles of a UN soldier they captured, brandishing them as a talisman. Another remembers the taste of his liver. A third has tied another UN soldier's penis to his wrist. Others simply stubbed their ganja butts on the mutilated bodies.

5. Chaos and cannibalism under Congo's bloody skies

In this harrowing special report from the Democratic Republic of Congo, film-maker Sam Kiley accuses Britain of turning its back on a human tragedy that has already claimed more lives than any conflict since the Second World War

They knew it could happen. The two middle-ranking officers, observers with the United Nations mission in Congo, had already warned their headquarters. They called again saying: 'Get us out of here - we're going to get killed.'

Drunken, red-eyed youths and heavily armed children high on marijuana fingered their weapons, flashed their knives. They hungrily peered in on the two unarmed volunteers in a remote outpost of the $2 million-a-day mission to Congo.
