Warner (Gov. Va.) Blasts Bush Administration
Tysons Corner, Va. (AP)

Gov. Mark R. Warner told state labor leaders Friday that Bush administration policies do little to help working men and women in Virginia.

Warner, speaking at the state AFL-CIO convention, discussed the Southside Virginia workers who recently lost their jobs when Pillowtex shut down. He said he doubts that many of those workers benefited from the tax cuts championed by President Bush.

The Democrat said the Bush administration is on pace to oversee a nationwide job loss unprecedented since Herbert Hoover was president. -

Virginia AFL-CIO President Daniel LeBlanc, who presented $10,000 checks Thursday to the Virginia Democratic Party and the Virginia Democratic Senate Caucus, said the labor movement will focus on races where it can have the most impact, including the coal-mining region of southwest Virginia.

1. Good for Mark

I feel for Mark Warner ... Gov of my state, Virginia (until I head to PA)... The Richmond area is horrible and the local AM show WRVA runs rightwing propaganda 24 hours a day.

He took over a state after after Republican rule in a mess...He hasn't raised taxes...He's cut services, raised costs because thats what these people in VA want.

I heard some lady in the card shop the other day bitching about how much it now costs to send her kid to the local University (VCU in Richmond). I then saw her get into a Suburban SUV. If she can afford to gas that car up, then she can quit her bitching about the tuition costs, which are that high because the Reps have blown up the budget.

3. I own an SUV
And I couldn't really afford it. But I needed it because I am moving toward another state and can't afford the thousands a moving company would charge me. So please stop denouncing all owners of SUVs as we are all not these evil, greedy people that you make us out to be.

5. Point you missed

You missed the point.

If someone dares bitch about something as needed as a college education for their kid...CAN find the money to buy a vehicle that gets 14 miles to the gallon (about the same as a 1967 Chevelle SS with a 396 bigblock) then THEY SHOULD NOT bitch about the costs of college.

It's called priorities. If that education was more important than that SUV, she likely would have paid for the college, then WITH what was left over bought a smaller or less costly SUV.

THAT was MY POINT. Where did I say ALL SUV owners are THIS, THAT or the other thing?

And let me get this straight? You bought a vehicle simply because you were moving? I know SUVs are big, but I didn't think that you could put your entire dining room furniture and a bedroom suit in them.

7. I gave away most of my furniture to charity
Edited on Fri Aug-15-03 03:12 PM by jiacinto
and put the rest in storage here.

Maybe this family has more than one child and they all can't fit in a compact car. Did that ever occur to you?

Maybe this family needs the car to haul a lot of things in it?

It's not as clear cut as you make it out to be.

10. Conjecture

And maybe she doesn't have that. You make no point.

However, to whine about paying for college when you obviously have plenty of money to by a high maintenance vehicle like a SUV smacks of absurdity.

Again...Back to the point...WHERE DID I call you evil or greedy?

SUVs are dangerous ... Dangerous to people without one. I dread getting hit by a Excursion or a Suburban...and if Im behind one I can't see the traffic ahead.

SUVs also had a 14% death increase rate in rollovers just last year. Need more? They piss away gas, oil...force us to drill in ANWR or bomb Iraq.

With all that being said...I NEVER called you greedy or evil...

15. Hugh?

It is very clear. The numbers I just posted are fact. And the laws of physics are fact. And what I see (or dont) when behind a SUV is fact.

However, I won't stand for bitching by someone who has a 40,000 car and spends who knows what else on gas? She has this and is BITCHING about getting her kid an education, the paramount responsibility of parenthood.

As far as the drilling and such, YES Bush would be doing wars and despoling forests if we had cars that ran on garbage.

Again...where did I call You evil and greedy?

19. For Chrissakes...
Must you intrude upon every thread with your rationalizations for buying some gas-guzzling monstrosity? Feel comforted that hundreds of young men and women are dying and getting limbs blown off overseas so you can fill 'er up without guilt and make Bush's buddies an even tidier profit in the process. Sheesh -- you get tired of being picked on for your selfish choice? Too bad. I'm just sick of reading your confessionals about it in every other thread. You made the choice. Live with it but don't expect every one else here to assuage your guilt.

Yeah, jacinto, and I'm to the point where I don't care if this gets me kicked off the forum, I'm just sick and tired of reading about you and your SUV and how any comments at all even remotely related to the topic must reflect on YOU personally. Give it a rest already!!!!!!!!!

Edited on Fri Aug-15-03 03:15 PM by underpants
Yes the city is a mess.

EDIT_ Mark has done a fantastic job without having to grandstand about what he has done. Finally we got someone who has business accument without ignoring the services needed.

Funding was cut but services still continued (my work is associated with it) and then funding raised again.

12. Really

In this state with these wingnuts, Mark Warner has been brilliant. He is clearly someone with a great future in politics.

The wingnuts can't find anything really to bash him on. My mom recites some garbage out of the Times-Distort and thats about the best she can do.

Where was her bithing when Gilmore was asleep at the wheel>?

16. "Lack of vision" was the T-D spin
Edited on Fri Aug-15-03 03:42 PM by underpants
Well uh it's hard to have vision (as if Gilmore or Allen did) when you are busy fixing the mess the last TWO administrations created. His term is almost half way over and only now does he get to do HIS thing.

BTW did the T-D have a BOLD headline declaring that in fact the state is back in the REDfor this fiscal year?

Ha I thought not. I'd pay money to see H.Ross MacKenzie have to eat a Sunday edition. He is a wingnut the likes of which most DU'ers have no idea of how whacked a person can be.

Remember his comment about the USS COle disaster? "The officer of the deck must have been pregnant" Actual quote.

11. call me shallow, but ...
I'd love to see Demo governors Mark Warner of VA and James McGreevy of NJ on a ticket TOGETHER. A couple of real cuties! The Eye Candy Ticket.

Well, not really. But the campaign posters would be nice to look at.

20. I was thinking J.Warner

J.Warner will be due up in 2008 I believe. J.W. is probably more vulnerable. Allen is a right-wing folk hero around here. Warner actually has done non-right wing things like co-sponsor the Roadless Protection Act, a Clinton era ruling.

I'd much rather have Allen gone, but J.W. is the one about done. I actually met G.Allen. He is a very likeable guy. He is upper crust, but comes off as a "common guy" wearing boots and jeans. Unlike Bush, he's not a chimp.

He's got a gorgeous wife and graduated from UVa. Dude is almost unbeatable. Hell, I hate his politics, but even I like the SOB.

Lets get Warner first.
