Cleveland Faces Worst-Ever Water Crisis
Didn't Ohio go to Bush last election? May be different next year?

CLEVELAND - From beauty salons to homes to hospitals, people relied on bottled water Friday after an epic power outage sparked one of the worst water crises in the city's history.

Power was restored early Friday to four pumps that move water uphill from Lake Erie to 1.5 million customers in the city and suburbs, but the flow was a trickle at faucets because of low pressure.

"This is the crisis of a career for me," said Julius Ciaccia, Cleveland's water commissioner.

Ohio Gov. Bob Taft authorized use of about two dozen National Guard tankers to begin distributing emergency drinking water, but most businesses and residents were left with bottled water.

3. "Don't Cry for US, Argentina"
Grag Palast long ago wrote that the USA would eventually face the same bankrupting process, and infrastructure breakdown, as Argentina and other nations have.

We are only a pawn in the game.

9. Mortgage Company bankrupt today.
News said a large mortgage company went belly-up today. Told employees to take their stuff and leave. 1500 home loans in WA alone are endangered. Billions of dollars at stake! Is this the tip of the iceberg?

5. This was a glimpse of the thrilling World of Tomorrow
Last night I learned, when Torontonians were told to conserve water, that the city has only 24-hours worth of water in its reservoir. When the pumps are knocked out, the supply can't be replenished, and the level drops fast. By this morning we were down to 40%. Apparently a 24-hour supply is common for most cities.

What would happen if the water ran out? Well, we were told, there are contingency plans... truck in water, have distribution points...

Good Lord.

I've been reading much recently about peak oil. One thing that's stuck with me is how, without abundant, cheap energy, urban life as we know it will be untenable.

Like the title of Richard Heinberg's book says, The Party's Over.

8. What choice does this leave the rest of the world?
If we don't stop being so gluttonous, the rest of the world is going to have to try and stop us somehow I would think. We cannot continue with this consumerist mentality, there simply isn't enough resources for the whole world to live that way.
