U.N. Demands Israel Tear Down Barrier
UNITED NATIONS - The U.N. General Assembly overwhelmingly adopted a resolution Tuesday demanding that Israel comply with a world court decision and tear down the barrier it is building to seal off the West Bank.

The vote was 150 in favor, 6 opposed — including the United States — and 10 abstentions.

the UN General Assembly has just adopted a resolution against a barrier erected to prevent suicide bombers from murdering Israeli women and children, but, not one of your child-found 'statements' shows that a UN GENERAL ASSEMBLY RESOLUTION was proposed, let alone adopted, against the murder-rape-massacre-cleansing-butchery in Sudan, in which one million people have been displaced, and approximately one thousand individuals are being killed each week, where the Janjaweed attackers, functioning with the support of the Sudanese government, are attempting to "Arabize" the area by eliminating the presence of all black Africans...

UN condemns Sudan over Darfur ethnic cleansing

26 May - The UN Security Council today finally agreed on a resolution that strongly condemns the attacks on civilians in Sudan's Darfur region. The Council said the Sudanese government must reign in the "Arab" Janjaweed militias, which it so far has supported and which are believed to commit an ethnic cleansing campaign in Darfur.

Security Council endorses resolution on Sudan

UNITED NATIONS (CNN) -- The U.N. Security Council unanimously endorsed a resolution Friday to approve a peace process in Sudan that aims to end Africa's longest-running civil war.

In addition to addressing the monitoring of that agreement, which deals with the conflict in southern Sudan, the resolution also takes note of the problems in the western region of Darfur.

56. and it's stupid easy to understand...
that there is a big difference between the SC and the GA and that it is the GA that is being rightly accused of biasedly hyper-focusing on Israel while ignoring the crimes perpetrated by the rest of the world...

not to mention that the UN SC resolution was endorsed only after the events in Sudan have reached proportions of what is described as a 'human catastrophe', including millions dead and displaced...and that this just 10 years after the lessons of Rwanda, in which Kofi Anan, in his speech to the United Nations Human Rights Commission on April 7, 2004, said "we must never forget our collective failure to protect at least eight hundred thousand defenseless men, women, and children who perished in Rwanda"...

now why don't you wake up and read this from HRW:

TOO LITTLE, TOO LATE: SUDANESE AND INTERNATIONAL RESPONSE 2004
Ten years after the Rwandan genocide and despite years of soul-searching, the response of the international community to the events in Sudan has been nothing short of *SHAMEFUL*

UN PR Release on members not to "recognize" or "render aid or assistance"

http://www.un.org/apps/news/story.asp?NewsID=11418&Cr=middle&Cr1=east

UN Assembly votes overwhelmingly to demand Israel comply with ICJ ruling
20 July 2004 – The United Nations General Assembly today voted overwhelmingly to demand that Israel comply with an advisory opinion issued earlier this month by the World Court, which declared the construction of a separation barrier in and around the West Bank to be illegal.

In adopting a resolution by a vote of 150 to 6, with 10 abstentions, the Assembly also called on all UN Member States to comply with its obligations as contained in the finding by International Court of Justice (ICJ), http://www.icj-cij.org/icjwww/icjhome.htm which include a duty "not to recognize the illegal situation resulting from the construction of the wall in the occupied Palestinian territory, including in and around East Jerusalem" and "not to render aid or assistance in maintaining the situation created by such construction."

On 9 July the ICJ - the UN's principal judicial organ - issued an advisory opinion http://www.icj-cij.org/icjwww/ipresscom/ipress2004/ipresscom2004-28_mwp_20040709.htm saying the separation barrier was illegal and that construction must stop immediately. The Court also said Israel should make reparations for any damage caused, and that the Assembly and the Security Council should consider what steps to take "to bring to an end the illegal situation" created by the barrier.

The resolution, brought forward by Jordan on behalf of the Arab States, also asks Secretary-General Kofi Annan to set up a register of all damage caused to "all the natural or legal persons" in connection with Israel's construction of the barrier.

The Assembly called on both the Government of Israel and the Palestinian Authority to immediately implement their obligations under the Road Map http://www.un.org/News/dh/mideast/roadmap122002.pdf peace plan sponsored by the UN, European Union, Russian Federation and United States, which calls for a series of parallel and reciprocal steps by each party leading to two States living side-by-side in peace by 2005.

I would love to see some action here instead of empty resolutions. The UN's opinion in the I/P conflict has been pretty clear over the years, yet nothing ever comes of it. Sanctions are the first step, and I hope the world starts walking soon!

A huge land/water grab.

A legal wall would be on the international borders, but alas Israel is a rogue state.

John Kerry will stab Israel in the back because the support for Israel's 'wall' is not really there. He says what he has to, like any politician. But mark my words, that wall will be gone by 2008. Gone or move back to the 1967 borders. One way or another.

29. I disagree. It's a wall. It's illegal. It's designed to keep...
people out, AND to keep them in. You do not create one without creating the other at the same time. It simply cannot be done. Anyway, there's no point in you defending them. Israel lost the moral high ground decades ago (for obvious reasons) and as far as I can tell, they will not regain it in my lifetime.

As for the UN, I've lost count of just how many UN resolutions Israel has chosen to respond to with a resounding "Cheney Off" over the years. Last time I checked it was quite a long list of them. certainly, it's more than Iraq has ever had and, as I recall, way, way, WAY more than any other nation in the world. Ever.

As a former supporter of Israel, I say we kick them out of the UN, impose the strictest trade sanctions possible and cut them off without a mothercheneying dime. This is, I believe, appropriate in response to their numerous human rights violations along with their repeated violations of international laws and UN resolutions. Should Israel ever choose to clean up its act and return to the league of respectable nations, I'd welcome them with open arms. Until then, I have zero sympathy for them. Goodbye and good luck.

It's worth noting that I'd happily kick the US out of the UN as well, and would support the rest of the world imposing sanctions against us and calling in ALL of our loans immediately for exactly the same reasons - and perhaps a few more.

30. UN
I totally agree that unless some positive, concrete actions are taken by Israel in regards to the resolutions passed that sanctions should occur.

If this were Muslim nation (especially if it were rich in oil) we would be all over their asses. But since they "share our values" (according to the 2004 Platform - yuck) we sit back and let them break every single resolution passed.

The EU is getting strong enough that they will be able to impose meaningful sanctions with or without the US, which I hope they do.

The world is an ugly place with one superpower.

I was once a staunch supporter, and while I have no time for Arafat,
I abhor what is being done to the Palestinians. It is high time
for sanctions - perhaps it will have to come from the EU, as the
U.S. will veto any U.N. resolution.

I'd also like to hear Israel say that when peace is achieved, the
wall will come down. Wherever it is, it's a testament to the
failure of civilized dialogue.

The fence recognizes that reality.

The fence should come down when there is peace -- after a formal peace agreement. How do you define that peace though? Only one suicide bomber a week? A month? Do you think the bombings will stop even if the PA makes peace with Israel?

67. Formal peace agreement would obviously be a signed document.
I believe there will always be fanatics on both sides who will never
accept the rights of the other side to a place of their own, but the
ideal would be co-operation between the two peoples to keep any
attacks to a minimum.

And don't make the mistake of labelling only suicide bombers as
terrorists - it is also terrorism to bulldoze houses of innocent
people, and fire at children. It was also an Israeli who
assassinated Rabin, undoubtedly the best hope for achieving true
peace - wily enough to outsmart Arafat, but genuinely committed to
finding a viable way to peace.

Making America safe

Recent events and their impact on security

Hundred point scale, plus or minus.

Regime change in Iraq

Removing Saddam Hussein -- plus 20; good but not very important.

Installing a CIA operative to replace him -- minus 30.

Killing all those innocent Iraqis -- minus 40

Flipping the bird to our allies -- minus 30

All the torture at Abu Ghraib and elswhere -- minus 60

Building the wall where it is being built -- minus 100

Total score todate - Plus 20 for capturing Saddam Hussein

- Minus 260 for American foreign policy under Bush

An attack on Iran by the US or by Israel will have repercussions among Shias in Iraq and elsewhere. Our troops in Iraq will be the ones that will be in the line of fire for such folly.

41. Yup, and more negatives for propping up the House of Saud
Bush sets new records every day in turning the world against America. And only fools believe we are safer because the world fears the U.S. military might.

Shrub can stand by and watch Israel build the wall (and pay for it too), and he can stiff the U.N., and he can pull the wool over the eyes of the American electorate (with the help of our corporate owned and managed news networks), but he cannot fool all the people all the time. He has not fooled the people of the whole earth.

George Bush is the most despised man on the planet and anyone who thinks there are no consequences for ordinary Americans from that fact of life, is living in lala land.

Anyone know if there has been any UN action denouncing the terrorist tactics of the Palestinians?

SECRETARY-GENERAL STRONGLY CONDEMNS TEL AVIV TERRORIST ATTACK

The following statement was issued by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan in Bangkok on Sunday, 11 July:

The Secretary-General strongly condemns the terrorist attack that took place this morning in Tel Aviv. He sends his sincere sympathy and condolences to the Government of Israel and to the families of the victims. No cause whatsoever can justify terrorism.

In this connection, the Secretary-General urges the Palestinian Authority to do everything possible to end terror.

SECRETARY-GENERAL CONDEMNS SUICIDE BOMBING IN JERUSALEM AS ‘HEINOUS CRIME’,CALLS ON PALESTINIAN AUTHORITY TO BRING PERPETRATORS TO JUSTICE

The following statement attributable to the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan was issued today in Tokyo:

The Secretary General condemns the suicide bombing Sunday in Jerusalem. The deliberate targeting of civilians is a heinous crime and cannot be justified by any cause. We urge the Palestinian Authority to take the steps necessary to bring to justice those who plan, facilitate and carry out such crimes. Our thoughts and condolences go out to the families and victims of this crime.

SECRETARY-GENERAL DEPLORES VIOLENCE BY PALESTINIAN GROUPS,
SAYS ROAD MAP IS BEST PATH TO JUST, LASTING PEACE

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:

The Secretary-General deplores the violence by Palestinian groups over the weekend. Such violence is especially untimely following the Aqaba Summit, where the parties made a commitment to implementing the Quartet’s Road Map.

The Secretary-General calls on the parties not to allow violence, the aim of which is clearly to derail the peace process, to set the agenda. He commends the two Prime Ministers for their recent expressions of determination to stay the course. The Secretary-General believes that the Road Map sets out the best path to achieve a just, lasting and comprehensive peace that would ensure the security of the peoples of the Middle East.

SECRETARY-GENERAL GRAVELY CONCERNED AT ESCALATING VIOLENCE
BETWEEN ISRAELIS, PALESTINIANS

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:

The Secretary-General is gravely and increasingly concerned by the steady escalation in violence between Israelis and Palestinians, which has left

176 Palestinians and 30 Israelis dead since 1 January. He utterly condemns its latest manifestation, today’s terrorist attack in the Israeli city of Haifa.

The Secretary-General strongly believes that the parties should take urgent steps to draw back from this dangerous and de-humanizing situation. He once again calls on both sides to respect fully their obligations under international humanitarian law to protect the lives of civilians.

The Secretary-General remains convinced that violence will produce neither security nor lasting peace. He reiterates his call on the parties to allow the international community to help them find a peaceful way out of this conflict, based on the two-State solution through the implementation of the Quartet’s Road Map.

SECRETARY-GENERAL STRONGLY CONDEMNS TEL AVIV SUICIDE BOMBING,

SAYS VIOLENCE CANNOT SOLVE ISRAELI-PALESTINIAN CONFLICT

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:

The Secretary-General strongly condemns the double suicide bombing by Palestinian militants yesterday in Tel Aviv that killed at least 23 people and wounded more than 100. He sends his deepest sympathies and condolences to the families of the victims. The Secretary-General reiterates his long-standing position that such terrorist bombings are morally reprehensible and completely unjustified. They also run counter to every effort to find a peaceful solution to the current crisis.

Violence cannot solve the decades-old Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The Secretary-General calls on all Palestinians to pursue non-violent policies, as embodied in the international effort to end the crisis through the Quartet and its road map for a just and comprehensive peace. Mindful of the tragic killings that shatter lives on both sides, the Secretary-General also urges the Government of Israel to act with restraint in responding to this deadly attack and to help
de-escalate the current violence.

44. It's the Occupation, stupid! (to borrow from James Carville)
Edited on Tue Jul-20-04 09:58 PM by IndianaGreen
Go to the video store and rent a film titled "Red Dawn." It is about the US being occupied by a foreign power. Acts of "terror" become acts of patriotism as the resisting Americans fight the Occupation.

Mr. Sharon, tear down this wall!

43. Why didn't the U.S. veto it?
Haven't we vetoed 77 resolutions of the UN condemning Israel over the last few years?

What's up with that?

Don't we protect our fascist allies anymore?

45. The veto only applies to a vote in the Security Council
This was a vote by the General Assembly-all the countries. Security council is I believe only 15 countries. 5 permanent + 10 rotating seats.

46. It is a General Assembly resolution
The veto is only in the Security Council, an archaic institution that was established by the winning powers at the end of the Second World War.

47. Two things:
1. The wall is clearly a land grab. Moving the wall to legitimate boundaries solves that problem.

2. If the General Assembly was given a chance to vote to wipe Israel off the map, it would pass easily. The General Assembly has no power for a good reason.

49. When's the invasion?
If they don't comply with this resolution, then the only choice we have left is to invade right? Or is that why Bushie is wearing his "Peace President" hat today?

59. What's the UN really going to do about it
A paper tiger that has no moral or military authority to make anyone do anything that the targeted country doesn't want to do.

61. Paper Tiger
The UN is a paper tiger due to the United States lack of support, in my opinion anyway. If we were to actually support the resolutions that were passed, and actually followed through on resolutions that were passed by a vote (functional democratic process in work!) instead of our own interests, the UN may mean something.

63. So if Israel doesn't tear down the wall...
will they be in violation of a UN resolution, much like Iraq was in violation and that's why we had to invade?

Just asking....

65. Yes, but
I have little faith that anything will come of it.

I wonder how the US would feel if China, Russia, or France would take it upon themselves to go in and enforce the UN's resolutions the way we did in Iraq?

Not that I am advocating that. I think the first step should be sanctions, and not just symbolic ones.

68. When a country consistently ignores UN resolutions as Israel does
perhaps they should be suspended from the UN until they comply.
