Pakistani Mourners Torch U.S. Fast Food Outlet - KFC

Hundreds of angry Pakistani Shi'ite Muslims went on a rampage in Karachi on Sunday, destroying property and setting fire to an American fast food restaurant after the funeral of a doctor killed by gunmen.

Crowds of youths attacked a Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) outlet and smashed up a number of cars and motorcycles after the funeral of Abne Hasan, a Shi'ite doctor killed on Saturday, police and witnesses said.

"The mourners hurled stones and smashed glasses in KFC. Later they set it ablaze," Deputy Police Chief Tariq Jamil told Reuters from Karachi's central district, where the restaurant was attacked. The fire was quickly put out, witnesses said.

Pakistani hardline Islamists and Shi'ite Muslim groups are traditionally anti-American, but it was not clear why a U.S. fast food chain was targeted.

KFC has been incorporating blue into their familiar red & white color scheme recently. So apparently, they ARE trying to appear as a "symbol of America".

Symbol of the Pepsico semi-monopoly of the junkfood market would be more accurate.

American outlets like this are crippling their economies.

Also, a big part of the neocon sell of world domination by the US is that when everbody has McDonald's and KFC and we've all become one big strip mall, we'll all get along just fine...like we do in the good ol USA.

our leaders really don't care too much if millions take to the streets (here, there, anywhere) so long as all we do is shout and burn effigies...

but when we start to smash centers of commerce, when we start to physically object to the corporate presence in our neighborhoods- they don't like that at all. sherman just got nailed for what? three years? expect a similar crackdown over there, albeit thru musharrif and his ISI/CIA cronies.
