Documentary critical of Bush finally plays in Crawford (3000+ showed up!)
Edited on Thu Jul-29-04 12:27 AM by Dover
Local Texas newsman (KVUE) who was there said 1000 people were expected but over 3000 showed up to watch the movie. I will try to find this story from another source that's less tilted toward the Bush supporters.

'Fahrenheit 9/11' draws mix of Bush detractors, supporters

By Angela K. Brown
ASSOCIATED PRESS
Wednesday, July 28, 2004

CRAWFORD — Hundreds of people descended on this one-stoplight town a few miles from President Bush's ranch Wednesday night — half to show their support and the other half to see a documentary criticizing his administration.

Carloads of people cruised down Main Street with many holding pro-Bush signs out their windows, passing by a building where more than 300 Bush supporters spilled out of a rally. Some yelled their disdain as cars carrying moviegoers turned down the road leading to the parking lot where filmmaker Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11" was to be shown.

"While we certainly do not agree with Michael Moore . . . we do agree that it is important that we protect the right to be on a dissenting side of an issue," state Rep. Arlene Wohlgemuth said at the rally. She is the GOP congressional candidate for District 17, which includes Crawford.

Carol Bernhard and friends came from Austin and held a huge sign proclaiming "This is Bush Country."

She said she didn't plan to see the movie. "I'm not going to give that traitor any of my money," she said.

Showing the film was the idea of those at the Crawford Peace House, an interfaith gathering place that often serves as a catalyst for peace protests at Bush's nearby ranch.

"This was not done as a protest; it was a demonstration of free speech," said Kay Lucas, a volunteer with the Crawford Peace House.

7. I've never understood that "Pottery Barn policy"...
for one thing, that policy was written when I was a child, way before Pottery Barn was even thought of.

Second, the policy is "You break it, you buy it." Why am I not surpised bushco got this totally wrong.

14. Apparently, it was from a Thomas Friedman column
Or, so he said... He says Colin Powell apparently liked his column, and quoted from it a few times as he was trying to whack some sense into the neocons.

Then, he decided it was easier to "play along".

Woof. Good doggie. Woof. Woof. Go fetch.

Too bad he didn't stick to his guns and resign. It would have been the honorable thing to do.

4. As far as I'm concerned...
Anyone who does not see the movie forfeits the right to criticize it. I'm glad Moore forced O'Reilly to see the movie before dignifying his carnival show.

"Fahrenheit 9/11" Plays In Crawford

Jul 28, 2004 10:17 pm US/Central

Hundreds of people descended on tiny Crawford, a few miles from President Bush's ranch, some to show their support of the president and others to see a documentary criticizing his administration.

In this one-stoplight town, many folks aren't too happy about the arrival of filmmaker Michael Moore's blistering documentary "Fahrenheit 9/11."

About a thousand (1000) people watched the movie Wednesday.

About 300 people attended a pro-Bush rally before the
movie was shown in a parking lot by Crawford's high school football stadium.

Rally speakers included Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson and state Representative Arlene Wohlgemuth, the GOP congressional candidate for District 17, which includes Crawford....MORE

11. Hundreds watch "Fahrenheit" in Bush hometown
Thu 29 July, 2004 06:09
By David Morgan
<snip>
Sitting before a giant inflatable movie screen, filmgoers from across Texas booed and cheered as Moore's record-setting antiwar film satirically recounted Bush's controversial 2000 election and lambasted the president's response to the September 11, 2001, attacks and his reasons for going to war in Iraq.

Moore had pledged to come to the screening and even invited Bush to attend. But the bespectacled leftist gadfly abruptly pulled out on Wednesday, telling organisers he wanted his movie, not his differences with the Republican president, to be the evening's subject.

"But we're all here tonight," said John Wolf, leader of a Texas network of peace activists that organised the screening and asked for an $8 (4.4 pounds) donation as admission to benefit a local activist centre called the "Crawford Peace House."

Half a mile (1 km) away, scores of Bush supporters gathered for a rally to show their support for the president. Some were business owners from the Lone Star Parkway, Crawford's main street, which features several presidential souvenir shops.

20. "Hometown?"
Hundreds watch "Fahrenheit" in Bush hometown

I thought a "hometown" was a place you were ether born in and/or grew up in. Apparently, this news source doesn't know that Bush bought his ranch during the 2000 campaign in order to better project the "good 'ol boy" image put forth by Rove, Hughes, et al.

13. I don't think it was anything more than two opposing view points

being aired in two DIFFERENT locations. As far as I can tell, the two groups did not directly confront each other. And the town of Crawford DID allow the showing of this movie without harrassment from the law, though I'm sure many locals disapproved. So I think it was pretty civil.

But the presense of the Tx. Land Commissioner among others should disturb Texans. These people are THEIR representatives, NOT BUSH's.

must have all been simmering like a slow simmering stew. After all, they own the world and the world in Crawford wasn't being FAIR to them by showing F911. They must have had bile for dessert. }(

realized that Michael Moore scored more than junior could have in his wildest dreams while on cocaine.
