TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran should never yield to U.S. pressure over its nuclear program, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said in a speech late on Monday.
The United States has accused Iran of using its domestic nuclear energy program as a smokescreen for steps to build atomic weapons.
Khamenei said Iran's nuclear program was geared to peaceful ends and the Islamic Republic's religious principles prevented it from ever resorting to atomic weapons.
"The United States is treating the whole world as if nations were indebted to it; showing any sign of weakness, and any tendency to yield to U.S. demands would be the gravest strategic mistake," he said in a speech carried by television and the state news agency IRNA on Tuesday morning.
"We cannot compromise over our fundamentals, just in order to please a part of the world that...is headed by the arrogant United States," he added.
