Schwab Target Of Bomb Scare
Edited on Tue Aug-19-03 10:29 AM by dArKeR
Packages of a suspicious nature were found Monday at the home of businessman Charles Schwab and at an office for his stock brokerage.

One device — a package with wires sticking out of it — was found at a Charles Schwab Corp. office at a mall in Carmel at about 7:15 a.m. A second similar device was found later on the doorstep of Schwab's home in Pebble Beach, according to Donna Galletti, spokeswoman for the Monterey County sheriff's department.

It was unclear whether Schwab was at home when the device was discovered, Galletti said.

The sheriff's office evacuated the immediate area in Carmel and called in the Santa Cruz County Bomb Squad, which used a robot to X-ray and detonate both devices Monday. The X-rays showed items consistent with a bomb, Galletti said.

In my opinion journalist and editors are nothing short of incompetent.
1. Title; If this was a bomb how do you know it was to scare someone or kill Schwab or someone which would make it NOT a 'scare' but a murder attempt.
2. Did it look like a bomb or was it a bomb? You say it was 'detonated' so obviously it had explosives. But your x-ray sentence makes it sould like it didn't have explosives?

3. The media reports on the fly
Edited on Tue Aug-19-03 10:25 AM by QuietStorm

they form an image in the public psyche. In doing so without the approrpiate facts they are irresponsible. Any time has the opportunity to follow a story from the very beginning this technique of forming first impressions is clear to see. Remember the early reports on the outage. These bozo's report anything and everything that comes down the wire. What happened to source checking.

Our headlines are filled these days with disclaimers. it *might have* started in ohio, it *may have* began in michigan, 6 people were killed when a bomb was dropped on a building in pursuite of a *suspected* terrorist.

It seems actual facts are no longer required in the news business. The only people that call for actual facts and viable sources or those that argue on forum. And then what happens some of the most viable sources are disallowed or dismissed while viable facts are disregarded entirely.

When truth finally does arrive the HEAVENS WILL FALL. Because it no longer looks like a truth game. Not in the news, not in the judiciary, not in the war department.

4. I agree....
... and also - who sends a package bomb with wires hanging out of it? A person skilled enough to build such a device wouldn't make such a mistake.
