...is the number of "Undecided" respondents.

In January, 39% were undecided; in May, the number dropped down to 19%; and now in the most recent poll, the numbers are back up to 32%. What's that all about?

Actually, based on my conversations with people, a significant
number of genuine Republicans are going to cast genuine primary
votes for Dr. Dean with the full intention of also casting
their General Election ballots for him.

New Hampshire is more "Libertarian-Republican" than "Fundie-
Republican", and Bush is not making any friends up here among
the "Libertarian-Republicans". Name any number of issues
including: 1) The deficit; 2) Middle-class taxes; 3) The
Conduct of the Wars; 4) Veterans' Rights; 5) Privacy and
Bush is pissing them off "big-time".

Don't assume that all Republican votes for Dean are "monkey-
wrenching" votes.

Nope, not in NH. Our rules are different.

On Primary Election Day, "Undeclared" voters may pull a
ballot for whichever party's primary they wish to vote in.
They instantly become a member of that party.

After voting, they can then walk over to the Registrar's
table, sign a card, and be instantly returned to their
undeclared status.

I do it every primary.

31. Funny/scary story...

So I was working as a "poll watcher" during the 2002 Primary
Election. You know, the guy that sits there next to the "check-
in" table, with a clipboard on his lap holding lists of likely
Democratic voters, checking them off as people announce
themselves and take either a Republican primary ballots
or a Democratic primary ballot. (In NH, Libertarians don't
have "ballot status" right now, so there's no Libertarian
primary in NH right now.)

And this guy comes up, in full camo, NRA stickers, and the
like, and asks everyone what I'm doing sitting there listening
to who he is and what party he's "voting for". I don't know
if the words he spoke were exactly "Commie Hippie Faggot
Bastard Liberal", but they weren't far from it. And he
starts ranting about how he's got a right to a secret ballot
and I had no right to be there or to write down which ballot
he took and he starts looking like he's going to punch somebody
out, preferably me, but he'd settle for the little old lady
who's doing the check-in.

(Now I ask you, do I look like a "Commie Hippie Faggot
Bastard Liberal"?



On second thought, don't answer that!)

Anyway, the moderator sees the commotion, comes over, and
we're both trying to explain to this gentleman that yes,
his ballot is secret, and during the GENERAL ELECTION
no one has any idea who he voted for, but Primary Elections
were different. And we explain how the Primary election is,
essentially, a set of simultaneous elections held FOR
the political parties who have "ballot status". And the fact
that he votes in any given election is A MATTER OF PUBLIC
RECORD so I had every right in the world to know whether
he voted in the Republican Primary or the Democratic Primary
election.

After a while, he cooled down enough to take a Republican
ballot (quelle surprise!!!) And we were all relieved when
he left and did NOT come back with any of his
(doubtless many) guns.

It was also interesting to watch as voters who were enrolled
in a party (that is, NOT undeclared) tried to take
a ballot for the "other" party. Usually, it was Republicans
who intended to vote for Bradley (so as to screw Gore).
And it was ALWAYS the Republicans who got noisily
angry about it.

If you want a real education, participate directly in your
local election process. If it doesn't scare the hell out
of you ("They let THAT person vote??? No wonder we're
in such a mess!"), it will it at least amaze you.

We need to hear more from him. I don't think a retired general is my cup of tea but would like to hear more of his ideas. I'm still quite "undecided" but love it when our candidates strike out at what is happening to America.

The consensus was that the "Frontrunner" in this election is Joe Lieberman, who took the early lead in the polls, and is still ahead in most nationwide polls:

I don't think so. Frontrunner status would mean the person most people think will win the nomination. I really doubt there is any consensus on DU that Lieberman is the one most likely to win.

There's a lot of support for Dean here in the most Republican county in the state.

Plenty of Republican voters in NH are flat out disgusted with their party. Bush has fucked up the country, and Governor Benson has fucked up the state. People are angry, and looking for something else. Howard Dean is a good something else. NH values budgetary and fiscal restraint above all - and that's an area where Dean shines.
