NEWARK, N.J. - A Methodist pastor who went to Iraq in March to protest the war said he will defy a government order to report his spending there, even under threat of fines or imprisonment.
The Rev. Frederick Boyle said he received a letter about two months ago from the Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Asset Control. The pastor of Titusville United Methodist Church in Mercer County, Boyle said the letter had been mailed to his ex-wife in New Hampshire, who forwarded it to him in New Jersey.
"They said they were aware of me because of my relatively high profile going to Iraq," said Boyle, 54. "I threw it away or I lost it, because I really didn't have any intention of responding to it."
Boyle said he called the assets control office last week after hearing that another visitor to Iraq, Faith Fillinger of Florida, had received a similar letter. Even though Boyle doesn't know Fillinger, he said he did not want the retired teacher to face the consequences alone.
