Shipyard president Thomas W. Epley said short furloughs aren't uncommon for Norshipco. His employees, he said, are accustomed to taking a few weeks off when work disappears.
But this time, more workers are being furloughed. And many will be out of work for months at a time, raising concerns that some may seek employment elsewhere.
"For one month or two months, a person has a hard time sitting at home waiting for a recall," Epley said. "I am concerned that not all of them will return."
Norshipco, owned by Arlington-based United Defense Industries Inc., has furloughed 200 employees since June and plans to put another 200 out of work by the end of September, he said. Epley said he hopes the employees will be recalled in October, when the workload should increase.
