Biggest US Law Group Condemns Torture, Calls for Independent Investigation

by Jim Lobe

WASHINGTON - The American Bar Association (ABA) this week added its voice to appeals for independent investigation of the abuse and torture by U.S. soldiers of detainees in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere in the Bush administrations "war on terrorism."

The use of torture and cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment by U.S. personnel in the interrogation of prisoners captured in the Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts has brought shame on the nation and undermined our standing in the world.

Adopting by an overwhelming margin a proposed resolution during its annual convention in Atlanta earlier this week, the nation's biggest law group also condemned the government's treatment of detainees and called on the administration to "comply fully" with the U.S. Constitution and international laws and conventions ratified by the United States that outlaw torture.

"The use of torture and cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment by U.S. personnel in the interrogation of prisoners captured in the Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts has brought shame on the nation and undermined our standing in the world," according to a report that accompanied the resolution.

1. Thanks for the post... The outcry grows louder, how long can it be ignored
First the Diplomats now the Bar Association. Scientists and Religious leaders have spoken out in the past, but all is still ignored. Hopefully a new awareness is growing out there, about what this Administration has done...still waiting for action, though.

2. if you saw Will Pitt's post in GD, the Pentagon is
holding meetings concerning torture of women and children today.
I hope the public gets some reporting on these stories.

The Pentagon approved the torture.

Gen. Geoffrey Miller expanded the torture at Gitmo to Abu Ghraib. He didn't do this without approval at the highest levels.

4. We need more journalists who can't be intimidated
or we are simply lost.

Thank you for this article. It should really be in the N.Y. Times and the Washington Post, of COURSE, but they're too busy, apparently.

Hopefully, Bush's people can't neutralize everyone, and more people are coming forward, bit by bit, to voice disapproval. This is an important step.

7. Thanks ABA (which includes plenty of corp. as well as "trial" lawyers)...
for taking a stand, and helping to save our system of government.
