President George W. Bush’s job performance rating has slipped to 52% positive, 48% negative, according to a poll of 1,011 likely U.S. voters by Zogby International. From a post-September 11th peak of 82%, his rating has slipped steadily with the exception of a slight increase following the official end of the war in Iraq.

I can see Bush finishing his term but I also see a repetition of LBJ. He either loses in New Hampshire or wins by such a narrow margin that his campaign is irrevocably damaged. By Super Tuesday he is toast.

If Bush looks vulnerable you can bet that McCain and posssibly a couple of others will jump into the race.

Wow, I can't say it won't happen, but it would take a crash-and-burn of catastrophic proportions for Chimp to fail to take the nomination. A sitting president hasn't failed to take his party's nomination since something like 1880 (the historians on this board can give the exact date.) He would have to do something to really piss off his base for them to turn against him like that.

because Zogby polls likely voters, not just registered voters or the public at large. What I find interesting is that Bush's favorable rating is higher than his overall rating. Also, this poll was done while Shrub was on vacation, and the partisan environment has died down temporarily.

Unnamed candidates tend to do better than individual candidates. People may have a growing disaffection with Bush, but unless the Dem candidate runs a great campaign, we're going to lose on the "War on Terror" issue alone. This campaign needs to be about going for the jugular, pointing out how Iraq has been a failure, how Bush went AWOL and why the economy has nose-dived..nothing less than eviscerating the man is going to get us this election.

My point is to take an evening in poll numbers with a grain of salt. Republicans have traditionally been able to pick up about a 5% advantage in an election simply by spouting patriotic nonsense, so we've got a long way to go before the president is in real trouble.

Karl Rove is not being seen much in public recently.

W's Drop Dead number is reelect at 38%, when even the most brutal negative campaign wouldn't be able to save him. That would be November/December at the present rate of decline of -1.5% a month.

They are going to be able to get W back to 45% or 47% sometime next year. Very fragile support, though. It'll be interesting to see what they decide to do. Try to win, or give up and openly loot the country for all it's worth.
