Powell Calls For Arafat To Assist In Clampdown
http://www.msnbc.com/news/801833.asp?0cv=CA01

-SNIP-
At the United Nations, U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell warned that Israel and the Palestinians were headed for “a cliff” if they abandon the so-called “road map” to peace and called on Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat to assist in the clampdown on the militant groups.
”(I) call on Chairman Arafat to work with (Palestinian) Prime Minister (Mahmoud) Abbas and to make available to ... Abbas those security elements that are under his control so that they can allow progress to be made on the ‘road map’ —end terror, end this violence,” Powell told reporters. “The end of the road map is a cliff that both sides will fall off of.”

I thought we couldn't work with Arafat and he was out of the loop. Can anyone tell me what our policy is over there?

Jay

1. They put him on ignore for months
and restrained his movements, but hey...bring
him out when it's convenient not to diss Abbas too much.

Please shoot me now.

2. "... thought we couldn't work with Arafat..."
exactly. what the hell do they think he's going to do for them now? If he was that influential they shouldn't have shoved him to the sidelines the way they did

3. Arafat calls on Colin Powell to resign
Calling him a liar and a war mongering genetic reject that only has inspired terrorism in the world.

Why doesn't junior ask for an audience with Arafat? Clinton had no problems talking to Arafat and keeping peace in the Middle East.

Who does Powell think he is......`Oh, never mind, Harry Belafone had it right.

6. I thought that Arafat was "irrelevant?"
I thought Israel had the best security in the world and that the Israeli policy of pre-eminent attacks and assassinations is what it takes to thwart terrorism? Isn't it obvious that this policy has only worked to make all matters worse in the ME? What am I missing here?
