Houston ChronicleOn July 19, 2003, Army 1st Lt. Jonathan Rozier received permission to use a satellite phone in the Iraqi desert to call his wife, Jessica. In the minutes available, they talked about their infant son Justin, and how Rozier longed to see them soon.
Three hours later, he was killed in an ambush. "We never got to talk to him" because phone time was scarce for troops in the field, said his mother, Barbara Rozier of Katy. ..
In honor of his sacrifice, Rozier's sister, Elizabeth, organized a drive to provide AT&T International calling cards for everyone in his unit — and later for others in which local troops are serving.
So far, the effort has focused on combat zone troops whom the family and friends know, and to others in their units.
"We've sent out around 240 and we're getting ready to mail out probably another 300," Barbara Rozier said. ..
