Democrat Dean seeks to challenge Bush on Iraq

SEATTLE, United States (AFP) - Cheering supporters packed a Seattle park to hear former Vermont governor Howard Dean, an opponent of the US war in Iraq, who is emerging as a frontrunner in the field of candidates seeking to challenge President George W. Bush in the 2004 election.

"People are sleepless in Seattle wondering whether they'll have health care, keep their jobs or if their kid will be the next to die in Iraq," Dean said Sunday at Seattle's Westlake Park where some 2,000 supporters turned out to hear the candidate seeking to win the Democratic Party's nomination for the presidential election.

Dean is following Bush in the economically-depressed US northwestern states of Idaho, Oregon and Washington to address economic and environmental woes and press his outspoken criticism of the Iraq war.

The president has been vacationing on his ranch in Texas but has made several trips to western states to raise funds for his presidential campaign and tout his environmental initiatives.

Up to 500 drum-banging demonstrators expressed their disapproval of Bush when he visited Seattle Friday.

Dean says he will repeal tax cuts proposed by Bush and use the funds to build infrastructure, fund a health care system and help with jobs and education.

Last week someone from DU pointed out that this phrase had been used on a television program in connection with Dean.

Sounds to me as though Rove is writing some of this stuff.

Anyway, the story could not deny the success that Dean is having.

I just have to laugh at the word choice of "insignificant" in reference to anything about Dean and the political movement that his campaign has become.

You should have hope. These weren't political "lookie loos" OR lock step activists. These were families and students that ranged the age, culture, gender, sexual orientation, and economic gaps AND the political spectrum.

WE will be the tidal wave that knocks Jr off of his tuffet.

I think the Dean campaign is brilliant and deserves to win the nomination. No other candidate is affectively ruffling the Bush issues like the Gov. is.
For all you DLC-ites out there..it's time to drop the tired out thinking about Dean. He's no liberal. He's man with political nuances that will help heal this country. But like the Gov. says..we have a huge part to play in this and we need to get real. The only way to beat Bush is to go after him, throw him off message, get under his skin, reveal that the emperior really does not wear any clothes....and it's time for him to go!Seeing how Dean is basically setting the Dem's agenda for the primaries, I think it's safe to say that the Insiders are basically mute and invisible and Dean will win the nomination AND the election.

...no mattter who it is, DLC or not if he gets beat out in the primaries. Which indicates to me he is much smarter than some of his supporters.

The Football

The Football, its official name is unknown, is a secure package that contains the necessary Gold Codes, or nuclear launch codes, the Presidents Decision Book, which details nuclear strike options available to the President, a secure SATCOM radio and handset. 18. Yep, it sure is scary having Bush in control of the football.

I might cave in by election time, but have to stand on principles for now. In our small state of VT, we often tend to vote for people regardless of their party affiliations. For example Jeffords (ex-Republican), and Bernie Sanders (Socialist). If it comes to voting for one of those who voted for Iraq war, I might just hold my nose (to avoid the stench) and vote for them to get rid of Bush. But, I hope it doesn't go that way.

19. Believe me. There are candidates I like much better than...

...Lieberman or Kerry. And I truly hope the one who wins is the one who says what I want to hear the most. But when the chips are down one has to look at the entirety of the world around us. And yes. The Football is a bitch. Worrying that the next time Bush feels a lttle funny and grabs the Football instead of a bag of pretzels can affect ones nerves over time. To think that no one in their right mind would ever put a recovering alcoholic, drug addicted, delusional, religious nut in command of a nuclear armed submarine, yet five idiots at the Supreme Court would put everything under the command of just such a person is amazing to me. What were those guys thinking when they stopped the Florida vote? I will never know.
