Arnold Trails, GOP Rivals Refuse to Quit
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Filed at 10:17 a.m. ET

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Arnold Schwarzenegger's top remaining Republican rivals refused to drop out of the gubernatorial race despite a new poll showing Schwarzenegger trailing the leading Democratic hopeful and pressure on the GOP to unify behind one candidate.

``This horse is in the race to the finish line,'' state Sen. Tom McClintock said Sunday, a day after fellow conservative Bill Simon abandoned the race, arguing that the crowded field could hurt GOP chances.

A spokesman for former baseball commissioner Peter Ueberroth said Ueberroth also plans to stay in the contest, and will begin airing radio ads this week

1. And so the long march slogs on . . .
Republicans should know by now that their best hope is the quick hit, the fast shuffle. As soon as folks have the time to examine their claims and pull them apart and inspect them a little more closely, they tend to turn into fecal matter.

Yeah, everyone loves Ah-nuld. Right up to the moment they actually have to look him over with an eye to his being in Sacramento. Then they realize that's really the way he is, and not just a movie cyborg. Then they come to their senses and say, "Let's find someone who can actually do the job, instead of this musclehead." His shelf life was about a week, maybe 10 days. Now he's starting to go stale, and his inability to articulate a platform or a vision for his administration looks less endearing and more alarming.

Good bye, Mr. Rips.

4. What's interesting to me is who's beholden to the RNC
Simon had to jump when Karl Rove said Frog, presumably because of favors they did for him in the 2002 election. But it doesn't look like McClintock owes them anything, and certainly Ueberroth doesn't.

How sad to be a tool...

28. Favors? (cough)
Bush avoided Simon like the plague during the 2002 CA governor's race...that may stem from the fact that Rove's horse in the GOP primary, Richard Riordan, was buried by Gray Davis-sponsored attack ads during the primary and lost to Simon, who was eminently unelectable

Bush was here giving Simon a photo-op and attending fund raising dinners for him during the gubernatorial campaign. Here's a pic to prove it. http://billsimon.org

30. This is how bored I am at work today...
I'm actually going to engage you in an argument over how much support Bush gave Simon in 2002...

I grant your point that Simon got a photo op with * in front of AF1 and that * appeared with Simon at a whopping three fundraisers. Big whoop, as the kids say. You can't tell me with a straight face that *, who at the time was on his faux "Corporate Responsibility" tour, was actually enthusiastic about being seen with Corporate Crook Simon, whose investment firm was slapped by a $78 million civil judgement (in fairness to Simon, later reversed).

Here's a pretty accurate assessment of *'s "hands-off" approach to campaigning for Simon in 2002:

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2002/08/23/politics/main519641.shtml

I point you to the middle of the article, in which CBS's political analyst is quoted as saying "The last thing they want is to come out here and be seen side by side with Bill Simon, because Simon is the poster boy for everything George Bush is now trying to fix with regard to corporate responsibility"

31. Granted - but is this "avoiding Simon like the plague"?
That's what you said. the picture refutes that. I grant you that he was less than enthusiastic, but he did attend Simon fundraisers that weren't widely reported - I demonstrated at one in fact.

Nonetheless, if Simon would have won, Bush and Rove would have been ecstatic, I'm sure you would agree. And they did help him as much as possible considering the lawsuits.

...what Karl Rove like a hawk. The current GOP leadership is stunningly ruthless and will not relinquish any power. You can bet they will do anything to place (not elect) a GOP governor.

That said, Schwarzenegger is not right-wing enough for their taste. What's a matter, 'cans? Are you scared women might actually use contraceptives?

Anyway, let's all stay tuned!

since he was Davis's key rival in the initial election. Oh well. He proved himself to be Karl's boy in the end, as is Arnie.

Here's hoping the after-effect of the GOP election loss hits Arnie's career with a negative impact.

9. Simon, McClintock and Ueberroth can all quit
and it probably won't matter to Arnold's chances because the 25% of the electorate that is the lunatic fringe right will just stay home rather than vote for "liberal" Arnold.

Bustamante wins in any event.

And, it's not over till it's over... Davis may beat this yet.

There are thousands of bright, experienced people in public service who would make a better governor than Arnold. 28 million people will pay the price of Arnold's ego trip.

21. Mr. S is no Ventura
At least Ventura WAS an independent. Mr. S. has his tuxedo tails firmly sewn to the Bush GOP. They seek to buy the "Ventura effect" without any of the questionable libertarian honesty at all. Dems must CONTINUOUSLY put the spotlight on the GOP power grab where even other GOP candidates and consrevatives are forced or pressured NOT to be allowed to be choice.

In order to prop up their troubled vacuity.

McClintock leaving this!!! He has CLEARLY indicated that he will be campaigning until October 7th!!! He has nothing to owe to the White House or KKKARL Rove for that matter, so why should he drop out. If he can get Simon's 6-7% over to support him then he will become competitive with Arnie Boy and the Repugs will have a real mess to fix up which cannot be achieved!!! I just love Repug Party inroad fighting!

35. I made such a post several weeks ago
and that might be the one you refer to. The recall statue is an old Ca law sponsored by the progressives nearly a century ago. Under it there have been thirty one recall campaigns with Davis being the first officeholder so unpopular the question actually gets as far as a vote. It's just the rest of the country never paid any attention before.

That's why I never can take the " coup " talk seriously. It seems to be almost a rite of passage for California governors. Had the unsuccessful campaign to recall Gov.Reagan worked, who here would seriously have called it a " coup ".

Instead what you have is a law whose design makes such campaigns inevitible. No governor ever can or will hold office and make the entire electorate happy. This statute gives the disaffected from either side a cudgel that California history should leave nobody surprised to see applied.

Hopefully this experience will prompt the legislature to abolish or at least place limits on the recall law. I doubt they will though. That would make too much sense.

Link referring to the number of prior recall campaigns in California.

20. Some decisions are between bad and worse
Do you drop out because you can't beat a muscle brained human action figure, or do you stay in and GET beaten by a muscle-brained human action figure? How long can a political career survive "Geez, you coudn't even beat a muscle-brained human action figure"?

P.S. On the Democratic side, the poll was the latest piece of good news for Bustamante, whose campaign picked up several key endorsements in recent days. Even Davis, who has opposed the lieutenant governor's "no on recall, yes on Bustamante" strategy, edged closer to adopting that plan as the Democrats' best alternative.

I WANT A ROYALTY PAYMENT!!!!!

22. Some California media lead with the GOP story, instead of the Cruz poll
It's amazing how the California media can find a way to put Arnold in the headline, no matter what the story. Instead of leading with the Cruz poll, some media lead with "GOP tries to consolidate", and somewhere in the article or news story, they mention the Cruz leading by 13% poll, as if it's only relevance to Californians is how it will affect Arnold's campaign.

Many in the media are trying very hard not to mention Cruz's name in a headline unless they absolutely have to.

32. No kidding Channel 9 today
Channel 9 produced a story where they asked people what their greatest concerns about their children were - answer - safety (wow, big surprise). They also asked about when they were most concerned about their kids - the time between school and when they get home from work (wow, another shocker).

When I saw this, I was commenting to a loved one that this is not reporting news, this is manufacturing an opinion piece to promote Arnold, and right after I said that they segwayed to the whole point of the fluff piece - "Arnold supported and promoted an after-school program that the state government refused to fund."

No mention that it was the Republicans in state government that held up the budget, demanding all kinds of cuts including from Arnold's after school program.

Pure propaganda with absolutely no news content. Shameful stuff.

34. Simon probably dropped out because he owes
a ton of dough in his last run and they probably
told him they would pay for it. As for McClintock,
he needs to leave because it would be good for
us. If he's the only real viable conservative
candidate, if he leaves, then the square heads
won't have anyone to vote for.

Arnold is "too liberal" and no one else is
conservative enough. That means a no show for
the right wing on election day. About a zillion
people have signed up to vote and the expectation
is that the turnout will be huge.

Have you seen those lame campaign ads they've got for Arnold?

Downright laughable. In fact, while at work today, I laughed quite heartily at one of them. I also noticed how the ad says "Let's Bring California Back", when I'm sure they would really like to say "Let's TAKE California Back". I assume they know how bad that would look.

I can't wait until this crap is defeated. Stop trying to grab power in my state, dammit!
