Officials say intelligence, not more troops, needed

WASHINGTON -- Faced with rising numbers of attacks, sabotage and foreign terrorists, U.S. officials on Sunday rejected sending more American troops to stabilize Iraq but said they would welcome additional help from other countries.

Better intelligence and cooperation from the Iraqi people are key to reversing the tide of violence, said L. Paul Bremer, the top U.S. civilian official in Iraq.

Gen. Richard Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said the United States would welcome a bigger international presence.

On CBS' "Face the Nation," Myers said that Gen. John Abizaid, the U.S. military commander in Iraq, hasn't asked for more troops, though the Pentagon would consider any such request.

Open your ears, General. The US has already been given the thumbs down on "more troops" by a sizeable number of countries. If the US wants more troops, go ask Rummy for them. He's the one resisting the need (due to privatization, but of course).

Can someone please point to a military compaign where better intelligence wouldn't have helped? This is such a "duh" statement - more intelligence is always better. Heck - in WWII if we had "perfect intelligence" perhaps we could have killed the Hitler and the Nazi high command with a lone commando.

Intelligence is going to guard the pipelines, power stations, and population centers? Intellegence would tell us it was a damn fool mistake starting ww3 to begin with. Intelligence is certainly in short supply, and not just the operational kind.

The promoting of "Iraqi cooperation" as a pancea is risible: a puppet Iraqi army and security apparatus would in fact function largely as the supply and intelligence arms of the resistance to U.S. occupation.

We're short on both replacement troops and on intelligence. Maybe we'll have some more intelligence in 15 months, but don't expect any more anytime soon.

Too little. Too late. It would have been great if the jerk that hired you had taken this approach. Let's say; on September 10, 2001 or prior.

Let's summarize. Captain Segway says we have a "terrorist" problem in Iraq. The Right Wingers tell us that we have to remove the evil powers that give shelter to terrorists. Okay, we did that. Mission Accomplished. So now we're back tracking and saying that better intelligence and cooperation are the tools we should use to fight "terrorism".

Something tells me that Bremer's days in Iraq are numbered and counting down rapidly.
