In Dean, some backers see hope for Texas' ailing Democratic Party

Dean's grass roots growing in Texas

On a Saturday morning in April, Glen Maxey, based at a folding table stocked with Howard Dean campaign materials, worked the hallway near the hotel conference room where the State Democratic Executive Committee was meeting.

On that day, long before Dean's campaign became the buzz of the presidential race, Maxey had the twinkling eye of a man convinced he was on the leading edge of a wave.

The next step for Maxey was convincing other folks.

<snip>

Win or lose -- Clinton or Dukakis -- Maxey sees Dean as a no-lose candidate for Texas Democrats.

"This is the real thing," Maxey said. "The kicker for me about Howard Dean is, I want to see the Democratic Party revived in Texas. What I see in Howard Dean is a catalyst for reviving an institution.

1. God Knows We Need A Revival
We need it revived.

It's either moribund or in hibernation. Tony Sanchez? Come on.

Someone told me that the person who was one of the managers of Sanchez's campaign here in Texas is now running Graham's campaign. No wonder Bob is getting soundly trounced.

3. The Texas Democrat Party has the same problem as the DLC
They both lack leadership and vision. Neither one of them has inspired anybody to anything in years. The most exciting thing to happen to Texas has been the Killer Ds and the Texas 11 Senators who have bravely taken a stand on fighting redistricting. And who came to bat for the brave Texans - MoveOn.org. MoveOn.org has taken the lead in raising money for these Texas Senators to help get their message out. The State party has been the one missing in action and AWOL. Totally ineffective. I agree with Glen Maxey on this one, Dean's campaign is building those grassroots connections and it is energizing the party again, all without the help of the "real party machine". In Texas the Democrat Party is like the Internet, when there's damage to the main system route, we just have to go around the damage and build a new route to the people.

Go Dean Go!!
