Earmarked contributions exceed loss of regular grants over anti-gay policy

North Coast Boy Scouts are receiving more money through the United Way than they did last year, despite United Way's decision to end funding because of Scouting's ban on homosexuals.
In an ironic twist, Scout supporters in Sonoma, Mendocino and Lake counties have more than compensated for the lost United Way grants by specifically earmarking their United Way contributions for Scouting.
In the fiscal year 2002-03, United Way of Sonoma-Mendocino-Lake received $41,300 in donor-designated gifts to the Boy Scouts, according to Mike Kasper, chief executive officer of United Way.
Thanks to donor designations, the Boy Scouts are "actually doing better" than they were before the direct funding cutoff, Kasper said.
