US debates military strikes on 'nuclear Iran'
http://news.ft.com/cms/s/eed88be8-0741-11d9-9672-00000e2511c8.html

The Bush administration's warnings that it will not "tolerate" a nuclear-armed Iran have opened up a lively policy debate in Washington over the merits of military strikes against the Islamic republic's nuclear programme.

Analysts close to the administration say military options are under consideration, but have not reached a level of seriousness that indicate the US is preparing actual action.

When asked, senior officials repeat that President George W. Bush is removing no option from the table - but that he believes the issue can be solved by diplomatic means.

Diplomacy on Wednesday appeared stalled.

19. He says it can be solved by diplomatic means?
I guess he'll let Kerry handle it then.

  :nuke:

EDIT: "What's the world comin' to," words from Fleetwood Mac song.

Lyrics:
What's the world coming to?
What's the world coming to?
Everyone's gone to the moon
What's the world coming to?

Every night, every day
In this house filled with shame
I can say I care
But there's no one there

There's no truth in my life
There's no light in my eyes
And it's all I guess
That I'll ever miss

What's the world coming to?
What's the world coming to?
Everyone's gone to the moon
What's the world coming to?

I can jump right off and fall right into the ocean
I can come right out and think just what I say
But if I don't call for a reservation
They'll just turn me down
Turn me inside out

I don't say what they want
I don't do what they say
So I'm on their list
So i'm gone, i guess

What's the world coming to?
What's the world coming to?
Everyone's gone to the moon
What's the world coming to?

What's the world coming to?
What's the world coming to?
Everyone's gone to the moon
What's the world coming to?

I'm just thinking a few years later, if Bush gets re-installed, imposes a draft, and arouses the American people into the kind of democratic resistance that would finally muster enough strength to stand up to these people and remove them from power.

You're too late, my friend, if you think due process alone is going to resolve this scenario at this late hour. I don't like the idea either, but it's exactly why the founding fathers included the Second Amendment.

Addendum: I'll just add that I still plan to vote for John Kerry, because he may just be able to bring us one step back from the abyss. But as long as the fascist neo-conservatives in the GOP retain their power, you can bet the bank that they're already planning a back-up plan to sabotage his presidency every step of the way.

They will return with a vengeance in 2008. Count on it.

6. A "lively policy debate" with Bush
Is like a battle of wits with an unarmed man. When the only tool you know how to use is a hammer eveything looks like a nail.

11. What is Kerry's position?
What is Kerry's position on Iran and its apparent quest for nuclear weapons?

20. Actually, no. I'm not clear about Kerry's Iran position.
"Definitely not the same position as PNACs, and you should know what his position is, shouldn't you?"

I suppose I should know Kerry's position on Iran. But it's often confusing to try to understand how Kerry feels about controversial issues. My guess is that he supports letting the Europeans discuss it for a few more years and then hope for the best when Iran admits to having a nuclear arsenal.

10. These guys need therapy.
Or maybe they just don't feel guilty enough yet. They are going to be stopped. They may kill half the planet before they're done, but they will be stopped. Hitler was stopped. The days of unbridled power are long over. Give yourselves up, guys.

12. If Iran doesn't have nukes it is derilect in protecting its citizens
With India, Pakistan, and Israel all having nukes, it would be stupid for Iran to not have any or other WMDs. Every Arab nation should have WMDs to protect itsself against Israel, the only country in the region to attack its neighbors with bombs.

14. lemme see if I have this straight . . .
it's okay for the U.S. to have nuclear weapons . . . even though we're the only country to have ever actually used them . . . but it's not okay for Iran to even contemplate nuclear weapons . . .

sounds to me like BushCo is just looking for an excuse to start another war . . . and to extend what they imagine to be some kind of growing U.S. hegemony in the region . . . lord, what fools these mortals be . . .

Edited on Thu Sep-16-04 02:23 AM by teryang
They have been looking for an opportunity to attack Iran for some time now. It would be a grievous blunder. Iran is an Anglo-American oil company objective. The neo-cons like it as a target because it fits the neo-religious objective of removing all limits to Israeli expanisionism.
