7. Cooler still would be if God...
> I hope God stops it!

Cooler still would be if God did something dramatic like blasting
the rock with new writing that said, for example, "Stop reading
that God-damned (yes, I mean it!) Old Testament and start
listening to what my Son said in the New testament! We've made
some changes since 4,000 years ago and you should too!"

God would strike the 10 commandments in half since it's more of a Golden Calf than any true spiritual meaning (aka Exodus 32)

4. Hey Alabama...a suggestion...
Auction this monument off to churches. Every state I know of needs the money. I'm sure there are any number of churches that would love to have this monument as a symbol.

I'd like 10% for coming up with the idea, please.

16. At this point
Moore has more to gain from the spectacle of a couple hundred fundies being carried off by police than he does by having the monument kept in place. I wish the leadership in 'Bama would be clever enough to deny them this PR opportunity.

8. Praying on a loudspeaker
Hilarious. The CNN guy can't hear anything Soledad is saying because of the loud praying. Why, exactly would one need a loudspeaker to communicate with God?

And while I'm on the subject, what is with the accents of the speakers? I've lived in Alabama all my life, and those guys aren't from Alabama.

The guy talking now is from Washington, and he's threatening the company that has been hired to move the monument. He's saying "they'll be sorry...".:puke:

Matthew 6:5

And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

The real Christians pay attention to the next verse:

Matthew 6:6

But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

It's a shame when a Pagan knows what their Christ said about public prayer better than they do.

This little exercise about the separation of church and state takes all the attention away from the REAL exercise about the separation of church and state. And that is: The church (Christian Coalition and it's various mutations) are running our State. What a tempest in a teapot, a lovely smoke screen. Keeps the troops and the faithful occupied.

18. I'm sorry, but this is INSANE!
Such high drama. These people cannot step back and see this from an outside perspective. This thing represents just a statue, (or washing machine as someone just suggested!) But it is being given importance it doesn't deserve as an object.

At the rate they are weeping and praying, someone is going to begin speaking in tongues or seeing visions from all the intensity being exhibited here.

They should place on the grounds of a church, where people will flock to it, maybe charge admission?

Here’s what really pisses me off about this. If these people were peace protesters, civil rights protesters or environmental protesters they would have been fire hosed, pepper sprayed, shot with rubber bullets and had the dogs sic’d on them. Riot police would have stormed them and kicked the crap out of them before dragging them off to jail.

What I meant was that everyone knew it was there the next day. The locals covered it, but I don't recall CNN setting up station outside the courthouse explaining what had happened.

Again, I guess it was because it didn't have the potential for violence, like the removal does.

Workers remove Ten Commandments monument

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -- A moving crew rolled a massive Ten Commandments monument out of the rotunda of the Alabama Judicial Building on Wednesday to comply with a federal court order, as anguished protesters prayed at the building's steps.

It took about an hour and a-half to lift the 5,280-pound granite marker and roll it from its public site to a private place in the building.

About 100 pro-monument supporters who have been on a weeklong vigil on the building's front plaza were urged to remain calm and not rush the glass doors. Some yelled, but the crowd was restrained.

Two dozen city police were stationed around the perimeter of the building and others patrolled the surrounding block on motorcycles.

It's about time.

62. Glad to hear they’re moving that edifice the hell out….
But, me thinks this cultural war we’re in is just going to get a little crazier with more acts of defiance and possibly more.

It’s encouraging that the courts have been upholding the Constitution in this area (for the most part). But the continued pandering of our elected officials is troublesome. After the 9th circuit struck down the pledge, all of congress were out on the front steps openly acting in defiance of the decision. Protest of policy is one thing, protest of constitutional rule of law is akin to anarchy. This country is a secular republic, not a theocracy nor a mob-rule democracy.

There was a letter-to-the-editor in the L.A. Times recently, where the writer basically said that this country was 86% Christian and the other 14% need to shut up.

Our elected officials are there to uphold the Constitution and lead by example. Unfortunately, their leadership has moved us into this cultural war and the ramifications may have some unpleasant realities attached to it.

Being a Jew I'd like to know how these Christian fundies would feel if I placed a 4,000 lb monument of a Menorah or the Torah in their court houses secretly overnight. How long do you think it would take before they were singing the "Separation of Church and State" tune? Damn hypocrites.
