Liberal talk radio (really) set for NY debut
http://www.nypost.com/entertainment/4237.htm

THE much-anticipated, all-liberal talk radio network that promises to be the antidote to conservative powerhouses like Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Bob Grant is revving up to launch in January - just before the Iowa presidential caucuses.

The Post has learned that backers of the unnamed network are in active discussions with New York radio titan Arthur Liu to place its programming on one or more of his four local stations.

"They're interested in leasing some stations," said Liu, who owns WPAT, WKDM, WNSW and WZRC - stations that generally charge to run mainly foreign-language programming.

... The long-promised all-liberal radio network, financed mainly by Chicago venture capitalists and major Democratic-campaign money bags Sheldon and Anita Drobny, is still mum about its lefty lineup.

1. I think they need to find some liberals who already do talk
My #1 suggestion would be Randi Rhodes - she's already proven she's a ratings winner.

#2 Mike Malloy and Peter Werbe - they were also winners - too hot for their corporate bosses.

And how about scouring the country for some good liberals who are lost in local markets. There's a a few. There's a guy in Pittsburgh for instance who is great - John McIntyre who has a nightly TV show on Pittsburgh Cable channel - CNN had him in a spot last week against Anthrax Coulter and he held his own. He does great clever rants against Whistle-Ass at the hyperspeed at the end of many of his TV shows.

Let's not go to the same old same old. Franken and Janeane are great but out of the box they're going to be treated unmercifully. I'd love to see us get a fresh start. Find & build new hot talent! And how about a minority talent - on the right don't you get tired of angry white men and blonde bimbos with the occassional why are you a wingnut minority?

4. my choices for radio personalities would be....
joe conason
mario cuomo
michael moore
phil donahue
greg palast
mike malloy

they should put mike malloy on during the same time slot as rush limbaugh runs.

also, maybe our own william pitt could get a radio gig....wouldn't that be cool!

13. Cuomo Bombed
Cuomo already had a talk show in NY and it bombed, badly. New, young, fresh blood is what is needed.

All liberal radio will certainly sound foreign to the American public! I can't wait until it hits the Midwest.

7. If they have the bucks do what O' Reilly did
Or his backers did - pay the damn stations to carry you for a year. And we know O' Reilly is a big flop on radio - why not go after his slots on stations. There's a new program director at our little 5,000 watt station in town that carries one liberal voice in the wilderness. I'm going to suggest he dump O' Reilly and get whoever is in that time period for the liberal net. I think it would hold the audience from the local liberal host - the wingnuts are already listening to Rush Lardbutt on the 50,000 watt blowhard station.

10. Hell Yeah! He's still got the gift, too
Didja see him on TDS last week? Good Stuff!

Come to think of it, a Jon Stewart segment wouldn't be half bad as a weekly feature, either.

9. I'd listen to that
We do need to work on radio. Hope it makes it to Texas on some stations but certainly won't make Clear Channel stations. Great suggestions on talk show hosts so far.

I see hope.

12. If they have streaming online like ieamericaradio.com we can
still listen, though it would be nice to have a local channel. I doubt they will make it to Louisiana. Its as bad as Texas.

15. Get Jim Hightower and Molly Ivins. Also Greg Palast, and
is there a Hispanic liberal talk show person? I'd love to hear us in Spanish, too. Too many Hispanics are getting totally screwed by the Bushies.

16. Is this ever going to go national....
or will it just stay in the big city?
I live in Western North Carolina and
liberals have NO voice on the radio.
It really gets old having Rush Limbaugh
and his wannabees brain washing people
everyday and there is NO voice to
explain a liberal point of view. Yes
the big cities are important, but it
is the small communities that are
continuing to support rethugs because
of right wing highly effective think
tank propoganda via radio and t.v.

18. Talk Show Hosts Aren't Statesmen, They're Salesmen
Guys who do political talk shows from a right wing perspective can probably do the same thing from a left wing perspective. The trick is to attract an audience and sell advertising.

I have never listened to Rush Limbaugh, and only once tuned in by accident to Don Imus. Both of these guys are too well known to start working the other side of the street, but the likely talk show hosts on a liberal station may already be working as talk show hosts on conservative stations.

19. Wasn't Al Franken
the #1 pick? I thought he had already entered into negotiations, and I heard him say that he was very interested.

I hope whatever happens it doesn't become a Democratic Party network, but rather a real liberal network where all liberal voices can have a say. Personally I'm sick of the fat cat New Democrats thinking they own liberalism (and my vote).

Democrats should have a voice there, but it should only be one of many. Any liberal radio network that doesn't regularly have Howard Zinn and Noam Chomsky on it as "experts" and doesn't plug into Alternative Radio is going to be a farce!

That said, I'm really looking forward to what they can put together!!

22. Sounds like a good idea
The only reason the majority doesn't support tax increases and more
money spent on social welfare is because it's never be explained
to them properly. Once the word gets out there as to the need for us
to spend more of our paycheck for the benefit of the needy then we
will be on the path to a better America.

They will need to stress why worship of God is only allowed in churches
and how we need to get it off our currency and out of the courts. Another
important point to stress is that with enough cops on call there will
be no need for gun ownership. I just hope they don't whitewash the liberal message.

25. That's another good talking point
Sold properly we can convince the people that nobody is really
out to get us and our defense is overkill. Why would anyone in their
right mind try to take over the USA and invoke their own style of government?

America was founded with standards that should remian in place
with no outside influence. We don't need trillions to defend what's
right and unarguable.
