Wash Times: U.S. miscalculated security for Iraq

Top Bush administration officials grudgingly acknowledge that their post-Saddam Hussein plan for rebuilding Iraq has been substantially flawed on the security front.

Some defense officials said privately in interviews that the plan in place for security after Baghdad's fall has been an utter failure. They said it failed to predict any significant resistance from Saddam loyalists, much less the deadly combination of Ba'athist holdouts and foreign terrorists preying daily on American troops.

"Every briefing on postwar Iraq I attended never mentioned any of this," said a civilian policy adviser.

Officials say the prewar miscalculation is providing a new opportunity for the Bush administration. Iraq, like Afghanistan, has become a battlefield for fighting violent Muslim fundamentalists. A second U.S. victory in Iraq, after toppling Saddam, would deliver a significant defeat to Islamist terrorists and perhaps lessen their appeal in the Arab world, officials believe.

1200 US Military lost limbs etc but we just call it wounded - they are not "casualties"

7,800 reasonably verified Iraq civilian dead
20,000 estimated armless, etc Iraq civilian wounded.
10,000 to 45,000 Iraq military dead in US produced mass graves you may not take a photo off.
10,000 Iraq military wounded estimated.

And now "combat deaths only since May 1" is the only worry to Bush and our media - and of course the fact the 480 Billion deficit is after stealing $150 billion from Social Security and does not even include the estimated 100 billion for Iraq - no wait a minute - our media does not care about that either. The real question is do Democratic Presidential candidates change their position on issues over time in response to changed data - and how to let the public know that - unlike never changing Bush - this is EVIL WAFFLING!

that Iraq was made up of many contending populations and groups; that Iraq was an artificial construct that always threatened to fly apart; that an invasion would foster hate and terrorism; that an invasion would make much of the rest of the world hate the U.S. They didn't listen. Now, they can wallow in their mistakes -- but those who suffer are the Iraqi people and the troops we and Britain sent to Iraq.
