Cheney Pushed for More Trade With Iran (Fox News/AP)
WASHINGTON — Vice President Dick Cheney (search), who has called Iran "the world's leading exporter of terror," pushed to lift U.S. trade sanctions against Tehran while chairman of Halliburton (search) Co. in the 1990s. And his company's offshore subsidiaries also expanded business in Iran.

Democratic vice presidential candidate John Edwards (search) criticized Cheney in Tuesday night's debate for his position on Iran during the 1990s, and Edwards said he supports expanding the sanctions against Iran.

Cheney countered that he now supports sanctions against Iran but sidestepped the issue of Halliburton's involvement, saying it was being raised by Democrats "to try to confuse the voters."

Halliburton's foreign subsidiaries did about $65 million in business with Iran last year, company documents say. A federal grand jury is investigating whether Halliburton or its executives deliberately violated the U.S. ban on trade with Iran.

2. FOX Knows Bush is Done
This morning, I turned on 'Fox and Friends' and to my surprise, Bob Kerry was a guest, and that worm on the right and Bob Kerry were Chumming it up, along with the other two nitwits, the alternating Blond in the center and the Weather Guy, News Guy and (Janitor when he is not on the show) actually respected Bob Kerry and his comments without any of the usual daggers at Kerry or the Democrats that they are well known for when 'chit chatting' with each other.

Its all over gang for Bush, MSNBC has turned the tables on Bush.

IMUS in the Morning had Tim Russert on this Morning also, and Tim Russert was laughing along with IMUS as IMUS ripped apart Bush and compared Iraq with Vietnam.

The Fact is, its over for BUSH and they know it.

Personally, I think the Republicans WANT Bush out because the next 4 years is going to be really bad and they don't want one of their own taking the hits on a daily basis.

The real story unfolding is, all of these Bush Goebbels who supported Bush and the War on Iraq and demonized all who were against Bush.. what are they going to do and say when Kerry wins, or, will they all face exile from the airwaves, their propaganda no longer neccessary.... time will tell.

12. I've started to wonder, too ...
"Personally, I think the Republicans WANT Bush out because the next 4 years is going to be really bad and they don't want one of their own taking the hits on a daily basis."

I think they threw the election in 1992, too, or didn't try very hard, because the economy was in the shitter. That things improved under Clinton is probably a contributing factor to all the witch-hunting that went on late in Clinton's term. He did some things right, and some things went his way, so he was able to preside over a strong economy, good job creation numbers and relative peace. They were wicked pissed, in other words, that they didn't try hard enough to keep him from getting in there.

James Rhodes, who was governor of Ohio repeatedly in the seventies and eighties, once said something to a fellow Ohio Republican, when the fellow Republican suggesting smashing the Ohio Democratic Party to the point no Democrat was ever elected to an office above dogcatcher again. The gist of what he said was, 'oh, you don't want to do that -- this state would never have any revenue if we didn't get a Democrat elected once in a while so somebody could raise taxes and get the coffers full again.'

4. oh, wow... Cheney's quote.. Democrats raise facts "to confuse voters."
Edited on Fri Oct-08-04 03:39 PM by expatriot
How thoughtful of him not to want to confuse the simple peasantry.

Those evil Democrats are trying to use FACTS to COMPLICATE this election.

Thank you oh noble lord! Bush-Cheney: Keeping democracy simple.

I was planning to write an essay on what led to the War On Iraq and these were two of the many articles I was going to use. I was also itching to use them on DU and that thread was my chance. I was also queued up to talk with Hannity last night about these two stories but my cell died. the screener knew what i was going to talk about so maybe Hannity tipped Faux off. Then again, maybe it's just delusions of grandeur. I'm glad to see this stuff being dug up either way.

9. Cheney Funds Terror!
Edited on Fri Oct-08-04 04:01 PM by The Magistrate
That is the headline.

"Dick" Cheney has conspired for years to fund the terrorist enemies of the United States. His only condition for supporting these murderers is that he make a few bucks himself out of their hatred for the United States and its people. The treason of this posturing "patriot" is clear for all to see, in his own public statements, and in his own bank balances. Why does "Dick" Cheney oppose Al Queda? The answer is quite simple; they have not cut him and Halliburton in on the take. If they had had the sense to grease his palm with a little silver, he would have been campaigning hard for them as he did for the mullahs of Iran and the warlord of Libya.

"Treason doth never prosper, what's the Reason? Why, when it prosper, Sir, none dare call it Treason!"

"LET'S GO GET THOSE BUSH BASTARDS!"

13. Somebody should be pushing the Cuba angle on this.
Cheney came out and said that unilateral sanctions don't work. He's ripe for being put on the spot right now about the unilateral sanctions in place on Cuba.

This is important because Cuban-Floridians are currently pro-Bush and pro-sanctions. They need to know if Cheney's hand puppet is going to screw them over or not, and we desperately need their support.

Seriously, this is a case where I think one simple answer--or more likely, one weasely evasion--could cause an instant defection of thousands of Republican votes in a swing state which needs to be won overwhelmingly because the fix is in. Someone ask Bush and Cheney that question.

Ask it tonight.

While Cheney Was CEO, Halliburton Partnered With French Company to Do Over $70 Million In Business With Saddam Under Oil- For-Food. Under Cheney's leadership, Halliburton acquired two subsidiaries which had signed contracts to sell oil production equipment to Iraq under the oil-for-food program. The subsidiaries "sold water and sewage treatment pumps, spare parts for oil facilities and pipeline equipment to Baghdad through French affiliates from the first half of 1997 to the summer of 2000, U.N. records show." Halliburton made more than $73 million in deals with Saddam. (Washington Post, 6/23/01; Petroleum Economist, 6/93)

SEC And Justice Department Investigating Halliburton Bribery Charges During Cheney's Tenure. A judge is looking at whether Vice President Dick Cheney may have been responsible under law for at least one of four bribery payments exchanged between a Halliburton subsidiary and Nigerian officials to obtain contracts for liquefied natural projects.

Furthermore, the SEC, the Justice Department and the Nigerian government are also investigating the bribery charges against Halliburton.
