Al-Qaida link to Iraq blast reported (MSNRC)
Well you knew this was coming, right???

<snip>

Iraqi police have arrested four men in connection with the bombing of Iraq’s most holy Shiite Muslim shrine, and all four have connections to Osama bin Laden’s al-Qaida terror network, a senior police official said Saturday. The official said the death toll in the Friday bombing had risen to 107, including one of the most important Shiite clerics in Iraq.

THE OFFICIAL said the four arrested men — two Iraqis and two Saudis — were caught shortly after the car bombing that killed Ayatollah Mohammed Baqir al-Hakim, who had been cooperating with the American occupation force.

The police official, who lead the initial investigation and interrogation of the captives, said the prisoners told of other plots to kill political and religious leaders and to damage vital installations such as electricity generation plants, water supplies and oil pipelines.

The official, who refused to be named, said the bomb at the Imam Ali shrine — the burial place of the son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad — was made from the same type of materials used in the Aug. 19 bombing at the U.N. headquarters in Baghdad in which at least 23 people died and the Jordanian Embassy attack on Aug. 7. Nineteen people died in that vehicle bombing.

1. Phew!
Glad it's our old reliable whipping horse al-Qaeda. I thought for sure it was Lex Luthor.

2. I just saw this on Excite News
My first thought was BULLSH*&

I don't buy it. If they blamed them for the UN bombing, I might accept that.

I just don't see Al Queda bombing a mosque. Sorry.

4. Yes, but I still don't buy an Al Queda link . . .
Not to a mosque bombing. It goes too much against what they stand for. Especially a mosque of such significance.

8. I agree
It would be like Ashcroft blowing up a fundy church. Never happen.

However, we can play along with this. If they want to keep saying this we could respond with "If it was Al Queda then this just shows that our invasion has helped them get a foot-hold in Iraq."

17. I have not seen any proof that these guys are Saudi
Edited on Sat Aug-30-03 10:30 AM by NNN0LHI
All I keep hearing reported on cable is that someone thought they were Saudi because their skin was a little lighter and they had long beards. I think we should wait for something just bit more definitive than lighter skin and long beards before we begin taking anything our government says as truth. They might be the Smith Brothers of cough drop fame as far as any of us know.

5. "The official, who refused to be named."?
Why does no one ever want to be named? That leaves no one to take responsibility if it turns out to be another lie from this administration. Something is not right here.

9. Even if al-Qaida did it
that doesn't establish a link between Iraq and al-Qaida . bush has made Iraq a haven for terrorists. Iraq was a stable secular nation that did not support al-Qaida . My how things have changed.

14. This simply does not pass the "smell test"...
The "captives" always give up information so willingly...
Even al-Qaeda, who would want the Iraqis to be sympathetic to their cause, would not do this. Just ask yourself who really benefits from this? the CIA or Mossad is not beyond getting Arabs to pose as any group, paying their families huge sums of money and offering them immigration, to get a few would-be martyrs to do this. Notice it was not a suicide bombing. Neither the CIA or Mossad would sacrifice themselves for a cause but al-Qaeda would.

15. Well, W got his wish: AlQuaeda in Iraq! They weren't there before
the entire world knows it - since the debunking of Whistle's lies is internationally accepted. Iraq was safe, contained, peaceful, functional. Now is a terrorist haven - whatever name the authors of those actions take. It's not even that relevant. What is relevant is that bushco brought terrorism to yet another country. Congratulations! Mishun Accomplished!
