Bush Salutes Workers on Labor Day Weekend

Bush Salutes Workers on Labor Day Weekend

CRAWFORD, Texas - President Bush (news - web sites) says his latest round of tax cuts, increased worker productivity and more orders for manufacturers all point to economic recovery, but that he won't be satisfied until "the economy creates enough new jobs for American workers."

<snip>

He says Congress can help him — and the nation's workers — by passing a comprehensive energy plan, legal reform to curb frivolous lawsuits and new free trade agreements.

<snip>

Don't you love the line about "frivolous lawsuits"? Tell that to Faux News!

And there's more about his wonderful tax cuts, etc. Makes me puke.

And how about the part where "millions of families are receiving $400 checks?" I don't know many who got $400/kid.

2. I salute
all the workers who have become unemployed due to the Bush economic recovery moves. I hope these people who have been layed off due to cuts or closings can find work in our in-the-toilet economy.

I hate Bush. His voice, his face, his ridiculous ingratiating speeches to a public assumed to be stupid enough to buy his bullshit makes me :puke:

4. Get me a towel
I just barfed all over myself.
What a great way to celebrate labor: tell us how wonderful his tax cut is. How is a tax cut related to productivity BTW?
Sounds like the thread title should read: "Bush salutes self on labor day weekend".

He's given it to all of us. At least to the non-millionaires.

Wouldn't it be nice to take a month long tax paid vacation? :beer:

8. Absurd
Increased worker productivity = Fire half the staff and make the remaining half do double the work for the same pay.

Tax cuts have done nothing to reduce unemployment yet. First cut was in 2001. How many years does it take?

Lawsuits? What is he talking about? Of the 3 million jobs lost (net) how many were due to lawsuits?

"Free" trade? Please. Exporting your job to India won't help you put food on your family!

I'm sure the unemployed will get relief once the energy companies get to rip off the consumer even more.

22. How many years does it take?
At least twelve because that is when the Reagan tax cuts kicked in. Two thirds the way through Clinton's time in office and Reagans economy kicked in. After Bush* gets the boot and a Democrat takes over it will be Bush*'s economy that will kick in after a few years. :crazy: Ya sure I believe this crap.

10. Bush salutes government workers by cutting their pay raises in 2004
This is the same Bush that wants to get rid of overtime pay for everyone else. This time he is targeting government employees, including those that work for DOD, CIA, FBI, Homeland Department, etc:

August 27, 2003
President moves to limit 2004 federal pay raise
By Tom Shoop

President Bush issued a plan Wednesday designed to limit the pay increase for white-collar federal employees to an average of 2 percent in 2004.

<snip>

In a letter to congressional leaders Wednesday, President Bush outlined his alternative. It called for a 2 percent raise, divided between a 1.5 percent across-the-board increase and 0.5 percent in locality pay raises, which are determined by pay surveys conducted across the country by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

President Bush initially proposed the 2 percent raise in his fiscal 2004 budget, presented to Congress earlier this year.

Bush said he acted to limit raises because “full statutory civilian pay increases…would interfere with our nation’s ability to pursue the war on terrorism.”

33. salute labor with one lip, screw them with the other
THE GRINCH THAT STOLE LABOR DAY
by Greg Palast
Friday Aug 29, 2003

In celebration of the working person's holiday, Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao has announced the Bush Administration's plan to end the 60-year-old law which requires employers to pay time-and-a-half for overtime.

I'm sure you already knew that -- if you happened to have run across page 15,576 of the Federal Register.

According to the Register, where the Bush Administration likes to place it's little gifts to major campaign donors, 2.7 million workers will lose their overtime pay -- for a "benefit" of $1.53 billion. I put "benefit" in quotes because, in the official cost-benefit analysis issued by Bush's Labor Department, the amount employers will now be able to slice out of workers' pockets is tallied on the plus side of the rules change.

Nevertheless, workers getting their pay snipped shouldn't complain, because they will all be receiving promotions. These employees will be re-classified as managers exempt from the law. The change is promoted by the National Council of Chain Restaurants. You've met these 'managers' - they're the ones in the beanies and aprons whose management decisions are, "Hold the lettuce on that."

My favorite of Chao's little amendments would re-classify as "exempt professionals" anyone who learned their skill in the military. In other words, thousands of veterans will now lose overtime pay. I just can't understand why Bush didn't announce that one when he landed on the aircraft carrier.

And I lost it in July during the Bush Disaster. And haven't been able to find another.

So from a would-be worker, here's a salute: Fuck you, George.

I can't wait 'til Nov. '04 to kick your fscking ass out of office, and for this economy to start a real recovery.
