http://www.guardian.co.uk/spain/article/0,2763,1032089,00.htmlThe conservative government of Spain's prime minister, Jose Maria Aznar, yesterday outraged human rights campaigners by overriding the courts and refusing to request the extradition of 40 suspected Argentinian torturers and killers to face trial in Spain.
The decision, which lawyers said would be challenged in the supreme court, prevented two former Argentinian junta leaders, General Jorge Videla and Admiral Emilio Massera, from being tried in Madrid.
Thirty-seven other Argentinian officers and one civilian also avoided attempts to prosecute them for their role in the disappearance of at least 9,000 people between 1976 and 1983. The officers included Alfredo Astiz, a former naval captain known as the "blond angel of death". snip
Officials estimate that 9,000 Argentinians died or vanished during the junta years, but human rights groups say the figure could total 30,000.
