Episcopal head rejects Anglican appeal
http://washingtontimes.com/upi-breaking/20041019-112311-4963r.htm
(I apologize for the source, which of course slipped in its anti-gay spin, but this show the best quotes that I could find of what Griswold had to say. My mother is an Episcopalian and was very pleased that he stood up to the bigots)

snip of WT bigoted spin

" Frank Griswold, who runs the 2.3-million member U.S. branch of the 70 million-plus member worldwide Anglican communion, responded to Monday's so-called Windsor Report with a re-affirmation of the contributions that homosexuals make to the life of his highly fractured denomination.

"As presiding bishop I am obliged to affirm the positive contribution of gay and lesbian persons to every aspect of the life of our church," he said in a statement released almost immediately after the Windsor Report was disclosed.

"I regret that there are places within our communion where it is unsafe for them to speak out the truth of who they are."

snip

While the Windsor Report called on Griswold and the scores of other U.S. bishops who supported the consecration to apologize for their actions, Griswold only expressed regret that other Anglicans were so troubled with his inclusive sexual agenda.

1. don't recall that Jesus ever said
that His message was only for straights. In fact, don't recall Jesus ever saying anything against gays. Most gay bashers cite the words of Paul out of context-if you check out the whole passage, you find the apostle was saying that any form of sexuality distracts from spirtual attainment-but then Paul was in favor of celibacy.

2. Excellent!
I'm PROUD of Bishop Griswold--as a fellow Episcopalian of his--and equally proud of the rector of my church, Rev. Joe Cooper, who voted to confirm the bishop in New Hampshire. They did us proud--and I know that, being the progressive he is--Archbishop Williams in Canterbury is proud of them, too!:D

God bless our Church's leaders--standing up for what's right, and for what Jesus taught us!O8) :toast:

3. Lapsed Episcopalian; very lapsed.
My bishop was Bishop Pike in CA. He said espousing the concept of the holy trinity was like saying god was a "committee God" and was progressive across the board. As a teen, I loved the church since every three weeks we took communion with REAL WINE. Unfortunately, it was a shared chalice which, when I became an adult, caused me to realize I was imbibing a heavy duty germ pool.

I heard this on a radio news report and thought I was hallucinating.

Seriously, why would any organization apologize to a church (the Church of England) that presided and justified the most brutal aspects of almost 300 years of colonialism?

The Anglican Church leadership should get down on it's collective knees like good Episcopalians and beg the forgiveness of the entire world for standing by and watching murder, slavery, and exploitation around the globe by its parishioners. They could start with these lines from the Anglican Book of Common Prayer, General Confession:

"We have done those things we ought not to have done; and we have not done those things we ought to have done; and there is no health in us"

8. autorank, do you know who said this?
He or she is quoting the beauitiful Confession in the prayer book I grew up with and which has been supplanted by a more modern version for some years now. I'll never stop missing that musical and heart-felt language. And the sentiment in the quote you posted is more than to the point! Strangely enough, the very ones who were subjected to colonialism are the most against the inclusive communion favored by Bishop Griswold and the majority of Episcopalians in the United States.

11. jkshaw, welcome to DU!
I too grew up with the Book of Common Prayer. I was so disappointed when I returned to services after some time and found they'd 'modernized' perhaps the greatest prose document in the English language! Ah, well. I said the General Confession so many times that, right or wrong, this is my memory of one of my favorite lines. The General Confession is brilliant on several levels, not the least of which is that it is an affirmative statement by man reminding God of his/her obligation to forgive us. Those bold and clever English! I enjoyed your web site. Enjoy DU.

4. My bishop also voted in favor of the gay bishop. The Christians

who quote Paul forget that he said we see through the glass darkly. Who would be so presumptuous (except sociopaths like Bush and Asscrass) to think that they could know the mind of God. St Paul said something that they overlook in I Corinthians 10:29, "Why should my liberty be subject to the judgement of someone else's conscience?"

5. My church was one of the sponsors of the General Convention
where Bishop Robinson was approved, and he has since come back as a guest preacher.

During the General Convention, the Twin Cities local news programs were all gay bishop all the time. Later (I arrived in town just as the Convention was winding down), I heard that many members of the church were upset with the coverage, because a lot of other positive things had happened at the Convention.

I thought Robinson was a terrific preacher, and an unassuming and quietly humorous man ("I was pleased to look at the newspaper this morning and NOT see my picture on the front page"). By the way, he did not preach on sexuality, but on the Scripture lessons appointed for the day.

Years earlier, my church in Portland had a wonderful transitional deacon (kind of an internship for priests). Just before his ordination (held in our church), he came out during a sermon. We made sure he had a rousing ordination, and whichever church he is serving now is very lucky.

7. Although I'm Buddhist now,
Reading things like this make me very proud to have served in the Episcopal Church during my youth. I still have pictures of me and my sister in our choir robes.

10. "Fractured"
Edited on Wed Oct-20-04 09:08 AM by Unperson 309
is the word.

This is Mrs. 309. We've attended several Episcopalian
congregations in California which were led by openly gay
priests -- the bishop there is very open about his support
for gay and Lesbian clergy. One of those gay priests was
undoubtedly the best priest I've ever known -- open-minded,
socially aware, scholarly ( TWO doctorate degrees!)and living
(with his long-term partner in the parish rectory) a life of
the greatest personal sanctity of any priest I've ever
known. One wintry San Francisco day, he really DID give the
coat off his back to a cold homeless person who approached
him to ask for money. AFAIK, that is a true Christian.

Unfortunately, we are now living in a conservative diocese
and I am forced to be in the closet at the parish church I
now attend -- go in, take the Sacrament, and leave. My
hope is -- barring a change of heart by the bigots-in-place,
that if/when the Church splits, the ECUSA will get to keep the
church buildings and property, and the anti-gays will have
to set up congregations in store-fronts and living rooms.
*heh, heh* serve them right. Yeah, don't tell me -- not
very Christian of me, I suppose...

Mrs. 309
