Colorado Gov. Owens and wife to separate.
Just heard it on local NBC affiliate.

Governer "Woody" is often mentioned as a rising star in the Republican party. Don't know what impact this might have.

Knowing Repugs, wifey will fade into the background like a good Stepford wife would.

2. Its not good for them to divorce if they want to go up.
Especially if it is for something naughty. They tend
to lose their steam.

3. Even I'D be shocked if Woody did something "naughty"
He's painted as the straight arrow's straight arrow.

God, wouldn't it be great, tho. . .

21. "Paint" is the operative word.

The louder they scream virtue, the more I want to see what Larry Flynt turns up.

It's really strange for a Republican wife not to be locked in for the duration of the term.

7. It's ok if they remarry a junior staffer right away though
It's more important to be married just so people know they are not gay. Doesn't matter to whom, as long as it's a subservient, conservative, Christian woman.

25. How old do you think the second Mrs. Owens will be?
I bet that she will be significantly younger than the first Mrs. Owens since Republicans seem to love those trophy wives.

4. What will we tell the children?
I hate to see this, no matter who it happens to. I went through it 21 years ago and have remained a bachelor to this day. Marriage is tough.

22. you're getting married with at least 50% chance of failing and
being bankrupt, going through years of litigation, stress and child custody /support fights. Tough to sell these days

6. So much for Family Values, eh?
Colorado is, after all, home to "Focus on the Family". (And no, I'm not proud of that fact...)

11. He supported our Defense of Marriage Act, didn't he?
So, marriage needs defending only from people who can't have it. People who *can* have it may destroy it at will.

Go figger.

14. LOL, good one donco.
Constant moralizing as a political ploy seems to be rough on marriage, personal ethics, and life in general. Either that or it's merely projection in the 1st place.

You might want to bookmark this quote from the Republican Senate President. Might come in handy. A "nobody's business" quote from a Repug is always precious. :-)

"Bill Owens is a good governor, and that won't change," said Senate President John Andrews, R- Centennial. "Frances and the kids are a fine Colorado family, and that won't change. Nothing beyond that is anyone else's business."

8. my bet is on another woman...afterall, 'smiley' is a fake....
Edited on Sun Aug-31-03 11:57 PM by amen1234
three children....sad....and he waits for the busy labor day weekend to slip this into the news (hoping it'll go away)...and also, he waited until AFTER his re-election to make the big announcement, deceiving Colorado voters about his "family values" campaign platform...my bet is that the local news people will figure out who the governor's new squeeze is by Wednesday....

from the Denver Post....

"Owens, 52, is a Texas native and veteran Republican politician who has served in both the Colorado House and Senate. He is serving his second term as governor, having been elected by a landslide last November.

Owens, a devout Catholic, has touted family values as a cornerstone of his administration. Some immediately questioned what impact it would have on Owens’ future political career if the couple were to divorce. Owens has been mentioned by conservative Republicans as a potential presidential candidate, even though he has never publicly said he is interested in running."

15. "devotion" can't possibly be known

It is absurd that any newspaper or TV station describes anyone as "devout" in their religious beliefs. WE CAN'T KNOW HOW DEVOUT THEY ARE! Plus it turns logic on in its head to say he's a "devout" Catholic in one breath and then that he's near divorce in the next.

24. Family values? Does that include opposing gay marriages?
Religious conservatives claim that allowing gays and lesbians to marry would attack the sanctity of marriage. What is Owens' position on gay marriages? If he opposes gay marriages, how will he justify his own little attack on the institution of marriage?

16. Rough times ..
First Bill Janklow, GOP ex-Governor of South Dakota and current US Congressman, runs down a motorcyclist and is charged with manslaughter. Then GOP Mississippi Gubernatorial candidate Haley Barbour has his son arrested for public drunkeness. Lastly, GOP Colorado Governor Owens announces his separation from his wife. Rough times for the Governors of the 'family values' party!
