I could be wrong, but I thought these were the people that we just liberated the Iraqi people from? Donhttp://news.independent.co.uk/world/middle_east/story.jsp?story=439028
US looks to Saddam's former army for security
With the security crisis in Iraq deepening by the day, the United States is accelerating plans to form a large Iraqi militia to take some of the weight off its own isolated and overstretched troops.
The force, which could exceed 7,500 men, would draw on troops from the former army of Saddam Hussein, vetted to ensure they are not supporters of the ousted dictator. Ultimately, some Iraqi officials told The New York Times yesterday, the militia could replace US forces in charge of Iraqi cities.
The initiative has been given added urgency by a series of deadly bombings last month, culminating in the massive explosion at the holy city of Najaf on Friday, in which a leading Shia cleric, who had been ready to work with the Americans, was killed.
Even though the Bush administration is now putting out feelers for a United Nations resolution to persuade more foreign countries to send peace-keepers to Iraq, additional forces are unlikely to arrive for months, even if a deal can be struck. The militia force by contrast could be ready within a few weeks.
