Bowles for Senate
Charlotte's Erskine Bowles offers experience, detailed plans
Effective leadership in the U.S. Senate requires an ability to forge alliances and -- especially in these acutely polarized times -- a willingness to honor the common good over party ideology. Those are among the qualities N.C. voters should seek as they replace U.S. Sen. John Edwards.Voters face a choice between two experienced, high-profile candidates: Republican Richard Burr, 48, of Winston-Salem and Democrat Erskine Bowles, 59, of Charlotte. Libertarian Tom Bailey, 54, a roofer from Greensboro, is also running.
Rep. Burr, a former national sales manager for a distributing company, has represented the 5th Congressional District in northwestern North Carolina for a decade. Mr. Bowles is a Charlotte investment banker who built two successful financial services companies, headed the Small Business Administration 1993-94 and was White House chief of staff for President Clinton.
Both men are well-spoken, dedicated to public service and informed
about significant issues. Yet there are clear-cut differences.
