http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A11745-2003Sep1.htmlListening to Ari Fleischer used to be free if you had a press pass or got C-SPAN. Now, hearing the former White House press secretary praise President Bush can be pricey.
Fleischer raised $100,000 for his former boss's reelection campaign on Thursday at a fundraiser in South Burlington, Vt., with tickets running $1,500 a person or $2,500 a couple. During brief luncheon remarks at the Vermont National Country Club, Fleischer made no mention of the state's former governor, Howard Dean, a Democratic presidential contender who has surged in polls and fundraising.
Fleischer, in his seventh week away from the White House podium, is scheduled to headline five more Republican fundraisers over the next two months, with plans to speak at more Bush-Cheney events later.
Don't look for dirt on Bush or attacks on Democrats. Fleischer touts Bush's domestic and international agendas and notes improvements in the economy. "I'll be reflective of the president," Fleischer said. "That means I'll be positive."
He is scheduled to give more than 50 paid speeches to colleges, corporations and trade associations by next Memorial Day, earning five figures for each.
His first will be Sept. 11, at the University of Florida, in Gainesville. He plans to donate his fee for that speech to charities related to the terrorist attacks two years earlier.
