WIDOW: KELLY A BROKEN MAN AFTER MoD NAME LEAK

THE grieving widow of Dr David Kelly said yesterday the weapons expert died of a "broken heart" after being betrayed by his Defence Ministry bosses.

Giving a harrowing description of their last hours together before her husband left home to slit his wrist with an old Scout knife, Janice Kelly said: "He just sat and looked really very tired. He looked wretched.

"I was physically sick several times at this stage because he looked so desperate. He couldn't string two sentences together. He couldn't talk at all.

"I just thought he had a broken heart. He'd shrunk inside himself. I'd no idea at this stage what he might do later, absolutely no idea at all."

Mrs Kelly, 58, delivered her damning testimony, heard in respectful silence, in 1hr 7mins of evidence before the Hutton inquiry.

I really feel sorry for Mrs. Kelly. I'm starting to accept maybe he'd did commit suicide but I would need more investigation into, like; was MOD feeding him some kind drug to alter his mood? It's really hard to believe a man so tuff like Kelly would act in a rash manner. Would break his wife's heart. It wasn't the end of the world! He was the good guy!

2. even if Kelly supported war, as it now appears

using him as a scapegoat for the dossier leak was evil.

5. However, it does explain

why they were so keen to use him. The whole point of this exercise has been to distract attention away from WMD and their use in justifying the war. The government expected Kelly to justify the war and the WMD argument and to deny that he had spoken as reported to numerous reporters. This would have scored (and via Hutton still may score) a big propaganda point in their battle to distract attention away from the fact that the whole dossier was, effectively, fiction concocted by a compliant intelligence service eager to please Blair and co.

His support for the war may also help explain the state of mind he was in during those last days. On the one hand he had urged Iraqi scientists to co-operate with the inspectors, assuring them this would avert war. On the other, he was vigorously arguing for war to effect regime change. Bit of a conflict in there...

3. Just one things about this Kely biz. bothers me.....

On the day they announced they'd found his body, UK's ITN news ran a really bizarre news-breaking number on it that no one has so far commented on: the anchorwoman said: "Dr Kelly, who bears an uncanny facial resemblance to convicted mass murderer Dr Harold Shipman".
Now, KIelly's widow has talked of feeling distraught at hearing some Blair apparatchik smear her husband as a 'Walter Mitty character', but no mention of what may have been a gross defamation on prime lunchtime news in the UK.
Generally, the UK TV media is reasonably circumspect in such matters, and has never before - to my knowledge - said something like: "the murdered Italian banker Roberto Calvi, known as God's banker, - who bears a striking resemblance to Adolf Hitler", or "Diana, Princess of Wales, - a dead ringer for UK Conservative Chair Theresa May and ex premier John Major", or, indeed - "Princess Diana's mother Frances Shand Kydd - who looks like Barbara Bush's twin sister" - etc etc etc.

For the record, Dr Harold Shipman is a former Manchester-based GP who has been convicted of murdering a minimum of 150 of his elderly patients by lethal opiate injection and is suspected of having murdered maybe another 250+. His lengthy career of mass murder was overlooked by the local police and the UK medical regulatory/supervisory body, despite some public misgivings, including his record for morphine abuse early on in his career......

Nothing is from nothing. Can't imagine why such a comparison between Kelly and Shipman could have been scripted, or by who, on the day they found his corpse "among the bushes", as he kind of predicted.

4. Not the first time his appearance was compared to Shipman

I'm sorry to say this cheap point was made several times earlier in the week. After his televised interview by the Foreign Affairs Committee, several would-be witty sketchwriters penned articles reporting their impressions. Both that in the Guardian and that in the Independent made the same poor taste comparison to Shipman.
