BERLIN (Reuters) - Hollywood star Johnny Depp says the United States is a stupid, aggressive puppy and he will not live there until the political climate changed.

The 40-year-old actor, who stars in the "Pirates of the Caribbean", told the German news magazine Stern on Wednesday he was happier staying in the south of France with his wife, the French actress and singer Vanessa Paradis, and their two children.

"America is dumb, it's like a dumb puppy that has big teeth that can bite and hurt you, aggressive," he said.

"My daughter is four, my boy is one. I'd like them to see America as a toy, a broken toy. Investigate it a little, check it out, get this feeling and then get out," said the star of the off-beat films "Edward Scissorhands" and "Dead Man".

It's drawing closer to election time folks and I, for one, want to see a MAJOR change in Congress and the Administration. Who doesn't?!

It's an easy cliche to label leftists "anti-American." When world-famous, millionaire pretty-boys who can afford cloistered villas in the south of France, mouth-off about how bad of our country is, some of our countrymen (and women) are going to take offense. I'm not talking about GOP types. I'm more concerned about that wide swath of Independents (over 34% in a survey of polls) who don't hate their own country and are not inclined to hand-over its leadership to people who do. Granted, Depp's not running for anything for he kinda bats for our team now, doesn't he?

He wasn't just knocking Bush, he blasted the whole enchilada. That's fine if you ultimately don't care what happens in 2004, but I'm growing more concerned that about being hamstrung with stereotypes that defeat our broader political goals. Everytime a famous Leftist trashes this country, and not just the President, we lose votes.

They can and should stick it to Bush all day and night, but celebrities should lay-off the general population.

Why do people choose to leave when they are unhappy and bitching about everything? Why don't they stay and fight? A person like Depp may be somewhat influential in others decision making, but instead of trying to change from within, he just runs away. ....and one that has occured to me when thinking about moving. The problem is that this is a cultural issue, not a political one. During the war it wasn't so much that Bushco told the lies that .they did, it was the way the American people ate it up with very little to no critical evaluation of both the content and method. Without even looking at the content it was clear enough to me that he was lying simply because he said he wanted to invade first, and THEN started giving reasons.
I gotta tell you I hated walking down the street and looking at 80% of the people knowing that they probably supported this war against a country that was absolutely no threat to us. I just don't want to be surrounded by those types of people. And there's very little that any one person can do about it, because it's cultural and not political.

I would probably be making plans to move to another country, but I'm just shy of 50 and the physical effort (not to mention financial disruption) involved in such an undertaking is really daunting. Also, my approaching-the-hill age would make it that much harder to qualify for immigration and get re-established in a new job market.

The Bush Administration has heightened my dissatisfaction with living here, but my disconnect with America runs much deeper than who is president. I'm increasingly at odds with the culture itself -- the emphasis on money and conspicuous consumption, the blatant anti-intellectualism, an odd mix of sexual vulgarity and prudery, unrelenting glamorization of violence, religious extremism, and an escalating patriotic zeal that has crossed the line into idolatry.

None of these issues is a sudden, over-night phenomena -- more a gradual but unabating tide that keeps rising and rising, taking over a greater proportion of the population each year. I don't think it can be fought so much as simply withstood. Having gravitated to small town life I'm a little more exposed as out-of-step than I would be in an urban population where beleaguered bands of secular humanists can gather together, but returning to the city is high price to pay for my social dislocation.

Mostly, I just don't find the U.S. to be a civilized country. We have a high standard of technological gadgets and physical hygiene, but not a high standard of living. To my mind a high standard of living involves affordable public transportation, small neighborhoods with sidewalks, dining at family restaurants rather than fast-food drive-ins, walking at night without fear of assault, and conducting conversations about politics and literature with your average person on the street.

Paving over the entire country with super-highways and erecting sterile suburban neighborhoods grouped around shopping malls is my idea of Hell on Earth, but it seems to be the blue-print for the American Dream.

VENICE, Italy (AFP) - US actor Tim Robbins took a thinly-veiled sideswipe at fellow Hollywood stars who failed to follow his example and speak out against the US-led war on Iraq (news - web sites).


Robbins, in Venice to present the world premiere of his latest film "Code 42," said his vehement opposition to the war earlier this year had not damaged his Hollywood career.

"I think the recent controversy was a gift. It provided an opportunity to speak out about free speech," said Robbins, who added that others in Hollywood and across the United States had wanted to publicly oppose the war -- but chose not to.

"Freedom of speech starts with you opening your mouth and people often abdicate that freedom in their mind. "They choose not to speak. Once you choose not to speak, you might as well not have it," he said.

her country and he chose to live with her in her country.
I am amused that people seem to believe -If I am wrong,
forgive me- that if you are American, you are more of
an American living here than in other countries.

Depp is an American living abroard, expressing his American
views about our country. He worries for his kids and how they
will turn out not only because America is f**ked up right
now but because he's a celebrity and they would be
exposed to the hysteria we give celebrities here.

He can say what he wants. Just because he says America
is messed up now doesn't mean he's less of an American,
ungrateful, etc. He was MORTIFIED with a capital M over
the anti-French sentiments of our motherland and that
is probably part of his anger right now. I WAS EMBARRASSED
and still am over that too.

Speak up, Johnny Deep. You are an American. You can,
you know, good, bad or indifferent.

I loved Jack Sparrow.

It should be noted that the said he wouldn't live here until things
change. That's fine. Him speaking out and saying his piece, unlike
so many others with the same forum is part of the change process. I
would like to spend a year abroad sometime. I hope that doesn't make
me less of an American if I happen to criticize my country while
doing so. Being able to criticize your country, no matter where you
live is part of BEING an American. But then I'm 50. What would I

But living abroad also allows you to see your country and countrymen from another perspective... you know, without being a part of the crowd anymore. I've been critisizing my own country much more and probably more objectively since i've left (that doesn't mean i don't keep in touch though).
Anyways you can only really see a painting from afar.

Considering how he felt about Chirac and the war in Iraq (he thought Chirac was very sensible in trying to allow the inspections to continue).

Johnny Depp is just so cool. He's an amazing actor, extremely down to earth, and very intelligent. He made Jack Sparrow and Pirates of the Caribbean. I love that movie and he has a lot to do with it.
