Kerry Cries at Sad Story
<snip>

DERRY, N.H. (Reuters) - Maybe it was the ginger tea or the homemade brownies, but Democratic presidential hopeful John Kerry ran a gamut of emotions on Wednesday, angrily denouncing President Bush as "dead wrong" on Iraq and shedding tears at a jobless woman's story.

Crying in New Hampshire, site of the first major primary of election seasons for the past half century, proved disastrous to another Democrat's White House campaign

1. OMG...
...please, this is so incredibly stupid. Since the Bush coup, I find myself weeping with outrage and sadness over stuff all the time. Another damned non-story the whorepress is trying to gin up into something. What's with the "maybe it was the gingere tea or the homemade brownies"? Are they trying to imply something?

3. This piece was full of snarky
little fuck you's - like "ketchup heiress" and "reputation for aloofness" - this is the kind of hit piece that ALL Dems will have to struggle against in the coming months

You'll never see quotes like "traded Sammy Sosa" and "tendency to sound stupid" or "couldn't find oil in Texas" in AP and Reuters News stories.

What, exactly, disgusts you? It's called sarcasm. A pun. A hoo-hah. A ......nevermind....... It was a play on this bogus "news" headline. I'm guessing it was the "erection" thing. I apologize. I should have said "Dean gets woody..."

7. This reminds me of that Senator for Minnesota
that was running for President until someone
insulted his wife and he cried. It was the
kiss of death. Perhaps they are using this
story that way. Big deal. If its sad, cry.

16. Actually it was Ed Muskie
he was from Maine. It happened when he was running for president in 1972. (Muskie was Hubert Humphrey's (D-MN) running mate in 1968). I don't know why such a big deal was made out the incident - of course it was the year of CREEP and the plumbers. Humphrey used to get emotional and, if he never actually cried, you used think he was close to it. Come to think of it, I recall one time when Hubert did cry and he said he wasn't ashamed of it because, as he said, "a man who doesn't have tears doesn't have a heart."

19. the Muskie incident:
"A conservative newspaper in New Hampshire, the Union Leader, had printed an anonymous letter accusing Muskie of using the derogatory word "Canuck" to describe the state's French-Canadian population. The letter later proved to be one of the Nixon White House dirty tricks. The paper also had baited Muskie by writing in an editorial that his wife Jane smoked, drank, and cursed in an "unladylike" way. Muskie went to the Union Leader's offices in Manchester and, standing on a flatbed truck outside, condemned the paper and defended his wife. Furious and upset, he paused at one point and appeared (to some) to choke up."

31. Dr. Hunter Thompson said
in his book "Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Traill: 1972" that Ed Muskey was stoned on an exotic African drug called "ibocain". He said he didn't blame Muskey, that ibocain was some bad-ass stuff and anyone, even the heartless John Mitchell would have been bawling like a baby.

32. Looks like the VRWC was alive and well in 1972- read this....
from the same site:

"Ed... became extremely agitated and, on a wintry day, gave a speech on a makeshift platform in front of Loeb's newspaper. Tired, angry and exhausted, he launched into an emotional defense of his wife. His voice broke slightly as he choked up. But the press reported that Ed Muskie had cried tears of frustration. Horrors! In those days, anyone who would be president could not show emotion . . . and certainly could not cry. In my opinion, that single event derailed the Muskie campaign -- from then on, it was downhill. (Today, of course, politicians cry at the drop of a hat, and no one thinks any worse of him or her . . . and that's as it should be. If someone is without emotion, he is ipso facto disqualified to lead a nation in my view.)

Long after the event, David Broder of the Washington Post told me the "crying incident" was a bum rap. He was standing right down front. It was snowing, and, as flakes of snow landed on Ed Muskie's head, they melted and streaked down his face. One reporter decided they were tears, "pack mentality" became operative -- and everyone reported that Muskie had cried. Only Broder insists to this day that Muskie did not cry.

15. Amen to that
I'd rather have a President who sheds a tear because he has a good heart and who has the guts enough to lay his life on the line for his country, as opposed to a sniveling weasel who mocks an executed woman and went AWOl from a Guard position his family connections handed to his cowardly ass. I'm a Kucinich supporter, but I think it would be a good day if we had a man like Kerry at our helm. Anybody is better than Bush, of course, but, even though, John Kerry is not in my top couple choices for President, I still acknowledge that he is a helluva man and respect him immensely. I'd have no qualms voting for him if he were to win the nomination.

33. I hope that your post was sarcasm.
Because this is an insulting piece to any man worth his salt. Tears are for the strong-hearted, tears are for the "human". Any man or woman who cannot cry when moved to, is sad indeed.

he has cried, but usually tried to hold back tears at other times.mostly during the veterans day or memorial day. bill bradley did the same during the last primary against gore. and of course bill clinton always did. i see nothing wrong with it.

35. I agree it's positive. 'I feel your pain.' When this is a country in agony
It's the most human thing I've read about Kerry and I've been wanting him to show the country that he is the man who won my admiration by testifying before a senate commitee about the US atrocities in Vietnam as a decorated Vietnam vet. I want him to show passion for the well-being of his countryman again. This is what made the public embrace Clinton as an alternative to Bush the First. He has it in him and this is evidence.

21. oh, and when ol' Whistle-Ass cries ...
... he's showing how "compassionate" he is. Bah! Now there's a double standard for you -- when Democrats show emotion, they're wimps.

Seriously -- the number of times the media have made approving noises when George W. cries -- I swear, the man bursts into tears more than I do. And usually the sobbing is about himself (like at his gubernatorial goodbye party in Texas).

23. Jeb and Poppy do too ...
http://www.robertfulford.com/Crying.html

"The Bushes, it has slowly become clear, constitute a special case: an entire political family given to public crying. They raise the possibility (otherwise unknown in the medical literature) that tears
may run in clans, like red hair or blue eyes. After President George W. Bush visibly fought back tears during his inauguration last year, his father, also teary, explained: "We Bushes cry when
we're happy, we cry when we're sad."

Last week, Governor Jeb Bush of Florida broke down in tears at a conference on drugs when he thanked addiction treatment professionals for their support after his daughter's arrest on drug
charges. He apologized. "Bush men always cry," he explained. "It's a little genetic problem I got from my dad."

Certainly the many splendid lacrimal performances of George Herbert Walker Bush lend credence to that thesis. A piece in Time magazine, while acknowledging he was never a match for
Clinton, nevertheless classified him as a "frequent weeper." He cried when he heard Dixie Carter sing the national anthem, cried while listening to the Oak Ridge Boys perform on Air Force One,
cried when Paula Coughlin (a victim of the navy's Tailhook sex-harassment scandal) told him about her ordeal. And, uh, he cried when his dog Millie's first litter was brought to him."

27. I read a couple of the stories
and this struck me as a veiled comparison to President Clinton and his "I feel your pain" personna that the press loved to mock.
The headlines for this story are very snarky - "Kerry Cries at Woman's Sad Story" seemed to be the favorite among many that mention Kerry and crying.
This seems like a set-up - another little inside joke the press corps can toss back and forth among themselves. It's this year's version of the press remarking on Clinton "wiping away a tear" while they report the story as unmasking a phony and a bad actor to boot.
The whole tone of this story is that Kerry was faking emotion and isn't he just a cynical bastard who will do anything to win.

29. Good God!
The man shows empathy instead of this aloofness he has been accused of, and now we are ready to do a Muskie on him.

Unless this whole thing is a setup by the Kerry campaign, I commend Kerry for his compassion, and I will resist the cynical temptation to say that Kerry should have opened his wallet and given the woman enough money to get her kids through college. In case you didn't know this, Kerry is the wealthiest member of Congress, wealthier than Corzine, and that's without including his wife's money.

34. Another Prudenizing from the Bushevik Loyalist Editor at the Post
My Lord, it's so casual and so frequent nowadays.

Liberal media is now a puking sick joke. Now the Busheviks cry "liberal media" when the Corporate TV Pravda actually has the nerve to occasionally and mildly report what he actually did as compared to what he said.

How a nation become Truly Free Again (not this twilight, in which so much of the Old Republic is still with us but in which the underpinnings are sadly rotted out) with a Press like that?
