U.S. Quest for UN Help on Iraq Meets Wary Response
http://www.nytimes.com/reuters/international/international-iraq-un-reaction.html

LONDON (Reuters) - France and Germany reacted cautiously on Thursday to a U.S. move to win a United Nations mandate for a peacekeeping force for Iraq, and the new Iraqi foreign minister said Turkish troops would be unwelcome.

``It is not about the United Nations getting responsibility for what is happening there now, so nothing in the situation has actually changed,'' Olaf Scholz, general secretary of Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder's Social Democrats, told German radio.

``Germany didn't start the war and didn't participate in it so we must be very cautious about what we do,'' Scholz said, adding that Germany would limit its role to humanitarian aid.

Asked about a possible Turkish peacekeeping role, he (Iraqi Foreign Minister Zebari---a Kurd) told the Arabic television channel Al Jazeera: ``Our neighboring countries have their own political agendas, which they could bring with them to Iraq, thus causing more instability in Iraq.''

Belgian Foreign Minister Louis Michel welcomed the U.S. plan, but did not say if his country would provide troops.

Iraq's neighbor, Jordan, said it welcomed an expanded U.N. role in Iraq but had no plans to dispatch its own troops there.

Iraqi Suicide Bomber Wounds Two U.S. Troops-Military

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/nm/20030904/ts_nm/iraq_bomb_dc&cid=564&ncid=1473

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - An Iraqi civilian was killed and two U.S. soldiers wounded in a suicide bombing in central Iraq, a military spokesman said on Thursday.

The spokesman said the incident occurred on Wednesday in the town of Al-Ramadi, a bastion of support for ousted Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein and site of frequent attacks on U.S. troops about 60 miles west of Baghdad.

Residents of the town said the bombing occurred at the entrance of the main U.S. military base in the town, which is next to the campus of a university.

3. And we went back to them with a sheepish grin and asked:
"Hey, we're REALLY SORRY about calling you all wimps and threatening to embargo your goods and the Freedom Fries thing. Now, can you help us out and send some troops over there?" :eyes:

This ranks right down there with the "We were duped by Iraqi double agents about the WMD stashes" claim. Actually, maybe not quite as bad--that one was yet another bold-faced lie; the begging for help deal is just plain GROVELING!

Imagine--restoring dishonor, deceit--AND groveling--to the White House!

B-)

5. The ironic thing that *I* love is...
that the right has been saying over and over "everytime the French need to be bailed out, they always call on us". Now WE'RE calling on the French for help.

The whole argument is stupid. We're ALLIES, we're SUPPOSED to help each other out.

Sort of reminds me of this, from Chris Rock:
"I take care of my kids"
"You're supposed to, you dumb motherf***er!!"
