ALBUQUERQUE (AP)Texas senators starting their second month in self- imposed exile in New Mexico met today with Democratic presidential candidates who were in town for the first of a series of national debates.
Former House Minority Leader Dick Gephardt met behind closed doors with the Texans, who fled to Albuquerque on July 28 to block a Republican-backed congressional redistricting plan in their home state. Gephardt was scheduled to be followed by former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean.
Gephardt spoke briefly to reporters before going into a meeting with the senators, and said his ideas would be good enough to win the nomination and beat President Bush in next year's elections.
Several of the Texas Democrats left Albuquerque on Wednesday for Washington, D.C., to speak to the press about the redistricting standoff while others remained behind to meet with presidential candidates. ---
