Mujahideen forces have carried out several strikes upon coalition forces in Uruzgan, Badakhsan, Wardog and Logar. Twenty Afghan troops were killed in the attacks in Loogar including the provincial police IG and other high ranking police officials. On Tuesday morning a unit of 300 Mujahideen fighters launched an attack upon the district of Khas Uruzgan, the capital of Tareenkot. The attack was three pronged one from each side. The intensity of the attack was so great that the local administration surrendered after minor resistance. 32 high ranked government officials were arrested along with the district commissioner although some officials eluded capture, escaping to the provincial capital. Seven police fatalities were confirmed including high ranked officials, 14 Afghan troops received life threatening injuries. Taliban forces took custody of 60 klashankovs, rocket launchers and heavy ammunition reserves. Currency equalling almost 13 million Pakistani rupees was also taken by Mujahideen fighters. The latest reports confirm that Taliban forces hold full control of the region. Military analysts had predicted that Mujahideen forces would take control of the region iminently.
In Kunar, a US military base and convoy were both hit by rocket attacks and mortar fire. No estimate has been recieved regarding the casualties sustained by the US troops in the attack. Mujahideen forces have also ambushed a UN, MDP convoy in the district of Syedbad in the Wardog province. The attack resulted in the anihilation of two military vehicles while a third was left in flames. Three people were reported to have been killed and five others incurred life threatening attacks. The IG police of the province have indicated that Taliban forces were behind the attack. While speaking to the BBC Pastu service, he elaborated that a 20-30 men strong unit of Taliban fighters ambushed the UN convoy. ..In Northern Afghanistan two workers of the UN children program were injured in an attack by Mujahideen forces. The vehicles of both workers were badly damaged in the attack.
The governement of Hamid Karzai, has nominated Baaz Muhammad Ahmadi as the new commander of Herat. Thousands of Afghans thronged the streets of Herat in demonstrations and protests, in favour of the former commander of Herat, Ismail Khan. The protestors warned that if anyone other than Ismail Khan was given the post of commander of Herat, then they would be met with hostility and removed by force if neccessary. They insisted that Ismail khan was ideal for both posts of governor and military commander and any other figure appointed at these posts would not be tolerated....
