Hil says W is breaking his one promise to hubby Bill

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton charges President Bush is breaking a personal “president-to-president” promise made to her husband to protect one of the Clintons’ favorite programs, AmeriCorps.
“I personally know that there is a tradition among presidents when they succeed one another,” Clinton told AmeriCorps supporters Wednesday. “When my husband spoke with the present President Bush as they were changing the leadership of our country, the only thing my husband asked President Bush was to take care of AmeriCorps and national service.”

“So far, that promise made and even mentioned in the State of the Union has not been fulfilled,” said Clinton, D-N.Y.

<snip>

The fight over funding the Clinton-era program has taken a decidedly personal turn, in part because Bill Clinton honored a similar request in 1993 from Bush’s father.

3. These people don't believe in AmeriCorps
In fact, they never much liked the idea of working class people or non-white people going to college in the first place. They grudgingly went along with it when they had to, but fought affirmative action programs and financial aid programs every step of the way. If they had their way, the only black people on college campuses would be football and basketball players, so as to provide entertainment for the white upper middle class students. Now they want to destroy AmeriCorps just when tuitions are rising and the economy is stagnant. They want these people to be forced into George W. Bush's mercenary Army out of economic necessity or to end up in prison, which serves other business interests very well: the prison population is aging and getting sicker and they need fresh new healthy bodies to keep their business going.

5. Military as volunteers too
I believe it was on Cross Fire Tuesday, that Tucker Carlson said something to the effect that the U.S. shouldn't be in the business for paying for "volunteers" and Begala came back with something like: "Wait, our military is all volunteer..."

It didn't get pursued, but the idea was that we ask people to volunteer for military service, but we don't ask them to do it without pay or benefits.

I thought it was a great point and wish it would get carried forward by some of the Dem candidates. Americorps is critical to our country's morale and its infrastructure, both.

4. An example of AmeriCorps work:
Edited on Fri Sep-05-03 12:19 AM by TexasEditor
I've stayed at the "rustic cabins" near Hugo, Oklahoma built by AmeriCorps volunteers. The small cabins are $40 a night; the large vacation home cabins are $100-125 a night. Hugo is located in an area that needs all the help it can get... pretty, unspoiled and lacking in economic development.

Check out the photos of the cabins and their builders on this page:

7. About AmeriCorps
AmeriCorps members are Americans of all ages who have made a commitment to serve their communities and country.

AmeriCorps has four main goals:

1. Getting Things Done: Americorps members help communities solve problems in the areas of education, public safety, the environment, and other human needs by serving directly and by getting other people to serve as volunteers.

2. Strengthening Communities: AmeriCorps members help unite individuals from all backgrounds - and organizations of all kinds - in a common effort to improve communities.

3. Encouraging Responsibility: AmeriCorps members explore and exercise their responsibilities to their communities, their families, and themselves during their service experience and throughout their lives.

4. Expanding Opportunities: AmeriCorps helps those who help America. AmeriCorps members receive awards to further their education or to pay back student loans. They also gain valuable job experience, specialized training, and other skills.

8. c'mon Hillary
You're too smart. With the Bushes, you must know who you're dealing with. If I've got it figured out, you do. The Bush family = Satan. Deal with it.

11. Or is she?
Let's go a bit deeper than that. Hillary was quick to give Bush carte blanche in Iraq. Was she smart to do so? Or uncritical? Or worse?

You see....Whistle ass pronounces it "Ameri - corpse"

Who's produced more American corpses than Whistle Ass's crew??

Also, I guess when he says he supports the "Marine Corps" (pronounced corpse), he's not kidding.
