CNN: Official: Disneyland ride derails, injuring 11
Edited on Fri Sep-05-03 04:11 PM by undergroundrailroad

LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) -- A car on a roller coaster at Disneyland derailed Friday, injuring 11 people, an Anaheim city official said.

One person on the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad was in critical condition and taken to a nearby medical center for treatment, Los Angeles television station KCAL 9 reported.

A spokesman for the Walt Disney Co. park in Anaheim, California, confirmed that their had been an accident on the ride but had no details immediately.

"We have a total of 11 injuries and in varying degrees," Anaheim official John Nicoletti said. "The ride has been stabilized." Fire, police and theme park officials were at the scene, he said.

2. I could be wrong, but I think this is a Rove distraction.
Injuries and deaths at theme parks are not that unusual. Perhaps this story is receiving more coverage that it normally would to distract from the Schwarzenegger anti-female story or the job loss numbers.

13. The story is more relevant than it appears
This isn't just the story of an amusement-park accident. This is the story of a large corporation that's been systematically risking safety by trimming maintenance budgets to boost the bottom line. Many Disney fan sites have been complaining about maintenance and budget cuts for some time.

Thunder Mountain was due to be shut down next week for much overdue maintenance. Space Mountain was shut down for maintenance ahead of schedule earlier this summer when inspections revealed serious safety problems. This accident was clearly the end result of the corporate cost cutting we're seeing so much of nowadays.

A good site to read about Disneyland's many problems is

3. We need to DE-REGULATE the amusement industry
Ya see, that way the profit motive will drive these amusement parks to create safer rides. The problem is the all the safety regulations cut into the profits, if we remove them then more companies will invest in these parks and compete for the business and to do that they will strive to create the safest environment possible...

5. Truth in advertising
They did tell us, not only is it a world of laughter, it is concurrently a world of tears.

All macabre kidding aside, I hope everyone is going to be fundamentally all right.

10. I hope these injured people haven't given statements
to Disneyland officials before consulting with their attorneys. Disney's M.O. is to have someone on the spot immediately, when the injured parties are most likely to say things like, "Oh, it was all my fault. I was so clumsy." These hasty statements come back to haunt them if it turns out they have serious injuries and seek compensation.
