Registry to Track WTC Collapse's Effects(Asbestos, glass particles in air)
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=541&ncid=716&e=9&u=/ap/20030905/ap_on_he_me/attacks_health_registry

NEW YORK - From executives to food cart vendors, people who were near the World Trade Center when it collapsed began enrolling Friday in a registry to help determine the long-term health effects of breathing the soot-filled air.

Health officials hope to collect information from up to 300,000 people believed to have been near the twin towers during and shortly after the Sept. 11, 2001, attack. snip

Health officials said the registry was not launched in response to recent accusations that the Environmental Protection Agency (news - web sites) gave misleading assurances about air quality in the days after the terrorist attack.

But they called the registry their best chance to know the extent that contaminants affected people's health. Asbestos, glass particles and caustic powder were found in the air after the attack.

Asbestosis

From the American Lung Association

What Are Its Health Effects?

Asbestos fibers can have serious effects on your health if inhaled. There is no known safe exposure to asbestos. The greater the exposure, the greater the risk of developing an asbestos-related disease.

The amount of time between exposure to asbestos and the first signs of disease can be as much as 30 years. It is known that smokers exposed to asbestos have a much greater chance of developing lung cancer than just from smoking alone.

Asbestos can cause asbestosis, a scarring of the lungs that leads to breathing problems and heart failure. Workers who manufacture or use asbestos products and have high exposures to asbestos are often affected with asbestosis.

Inhalation of asbestos can also cause lung cancer and mesothelioma, a rare cancer of the lining of the chest and abdomen lining. It may be linked to cancer of the stomach, intestines, and rectum, as well.

4. Its worse.
Most of dowtown up to probably as high as 32 street lived in that cloud for a good week or two. You could smell it and feel sick in your lungs and throat from breathing the air for 3 months.
