LONDON: A former British cabinet minister who resigned in protest at the war on Iraq, said on Friday France had been right to insist the conflict must have United Nations approval and criticised Prime Minister Tony Blair for "rushing" to join the US invasion of the country.

"There wasn't an imminent threat (from Iraq)," former International Development Secretary Clare Short told BBC radio.

"We could have stuck with the Blix's process," she said, in reference to the search led by chief UN arms inspector Hans Blix for evidence in Iraq of weapons of mass destruction.

Blix's team pulled out in late February, when it became clear Britain and the United States intended to attack Iraq whether or not the arms inspectors uncovered such weapons there or whether the UN approved the invasion.

Will France, Germany, and Russia "bury the hatchet"? Will George II "let bygones be bygones"? Will America finally wake up to the madness of their boy king? Will Tony Blair be ousted? 4. I think Meacher's article

explains why the U.S. and Britain rushed to war. They wanted to control the oil. WMD were just an excuse. If the U.S. and Britain had waited for the U.N. to join, then they would not have had the control they now have.

By the way, it seems to me that the people of Iraq have a compelling reason to wage guerilla war now. IF the U.S. agrees to give some power to other countries, will the U.S. then agree to let those countries have some of the oil profits, thereby making it harder than ever for the Iraqi people to get their fair share?

2) The INSPECTIONS & CONTAINMENT WERE WORKING!

#2 is especially important as a counter to the NeoCon accusation that Bill Clinton believed that Saddam had WMD. TRUE, but Bill Clinton dealt with the issue by:

1) Surgical strikes
2) UN inspections & Containment

The failed bush* invasion of Iraq with the deaths and maiming of thousands of innocent civilians, and an open ended occupation PROVES beyond argument that the Clinton approach was right.....along with France, Germany, Russia, et al...the American Protest movement, the Global protest movement, Paul Wellstone, Robert Byrd, and shockingly few other Dems. ALL 100PerCent correct.
