When it comes to deaths, even some advocates point to a troubling irony: A movement aimed at protecting women has made its greatest strides in saving men.

From 1976 to 2002, the number of men murdered by their partners dropped 71 percent, according to the latest Bureau of Justice Statistics figures. The number of women slain by their partners also went down, but by much less — 25 percent.

Unlike men, women continue to face one of their greatest dangers in relationships supposedly built on love. Nearly a third of all women killed in 2002 died at the hands of an intimate partner. Despite decades of well-intentioned intervention, that percentage has remained relatively stable for a quarter-century.
